Senate Resolution 117
Senator Herring offered the follow-
ing resolution:Whereas, The tedious and time-
consuming task of renovating and re-
storing the space occupied by the Sen-
ate and the east wing of the Capitol
building was undertaken and success-
fully completed under the direction of
our able and dedicated colleague, Sen-
ator Jack Hightower; and
Whereas, The approach to the reno-
vation of the Capitol was carefully
studied and researched with the re-
sult that every painstaking effort was
made to utilize the original architec-
ture and to retain the natural beauty
of the Capitol building; and
Whereas, The original high ceilings
and beautiful cornices were restored
and, whenever possible, were created
in the new rooms; the design on orig-
inal doors, door facings and door
jambs were duplicated on every door;
the plaster walls and handsome wains-
coting were duplicated in exact dimen-
sions, as specified in the original Cap-
itol plans; plywood partitions housing
parts of state agencies and offices
were removed and the broad halls
were again opened to their original
intent; and
Whereas, The people of the State of
Texas are justifiably proud of our
beautiful and historic Capitol build-
ing, which has stood proudly since
its completion in 1888; the preserva-
tion of the building is a task which
cannot be taken lightly nor neglected;
it was with these things in mind that
Senator Hightower dedicated himself
to the task of restoring as much of
the east side of the building as pos-
sible to its original construction, to
retaining the natural integrity and
characteristics of the building, and
to following as closely as possible
the original architecture of the build-
ing in the new construction; now,
therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Senate of the
62nd Legislature of Texas desires
to express appreciation to our dis-
tinguished colleague, Senator Jack
Hightower, for the degree of excel-
lence which he has achieved in the
renovation of the Senate area and
the east wing of the Capitol build-
ing; and for his serious dedication
to this task which has required many
months of his time.
