Anent Yellow Fever. .
Dr. L. W. Cocke chief of the
oiling gang stationed here for sev
eral weeks and who 'left a few
fiavs airo. has been orolihc in in
terviews along Ins route anq per-
sists in saying that a case of yellow
fever was found in Brownsville.
Everybody who knows airythiug
knows there was no case of yellow
fever in Brownsville this year nor
any year since 1SS2 and Dj-.
Cocke's oersistencv in the matter
has become a source of considera
able ill feeling toward-that individ-
ual. When Dr. Cocke came here
it was not as a diagnostician of yel
low fever or any other disease and
furthermore he was told by one
who had authority in the matter
in the presence of quite a number
that his diagnosis of any case
would not be recognized and that
his business was to attend to the
oiling of all containers and to leave
diagnoses to those who knew
enough about such tniugs to give
a orooer diagnosis. In the face of
all this and also the fact that
no other case of yellow fever was
found and Dr. -Tabor savins: he
had grave doubts of the matter
which was concurred in and empha
sized by Dr. Wolff state quarantine
officer who positively stated and
still states that there was no yellow
fever here Dr. Cocke continues to
scatter the yellow fever reports
when he knows that such reports are
untrue and calculated to do harm
to our city. Wheii a man with no
reputation to lose comes here and
makes such reports claiming v au-
thority to diagnose any suspicious
case it is time to put a stop to it
of there is any way to do so and
if there is no way to stop the
mouth of such vile calumnies
against our city then a way should
lie made. When Dr. Cocke came
here instead of working to secure
the co-operotiou of the city in the
matter of sanitation he antagonized
our people and because he could
not drive them to do as he wished
made the declaration of yellow
fever in the first case of sickness
he could find. After his arrival a
day or two it was currently re-
ported in the city that inside of
two days yellow fever would be
found in Brownsville. Everybody
knows that such was the case and
in less than twenty-four hours the
rumor was broad cast in town that
yellow fever existed here-. Now
our people are tired of this sort of
thing and Dr. Cocke had better
cease his talk of yellow fever at
Brownsville and make his visits
here as scarce as cases of 3'ellow
fever really are in this section as
the city does not Kke to entertain
men who seek to burden it with
unjust and unfounded rumors.

Manufacturers cf cigarettes have
found anew way to nrrease their
ales. Any hotel restaurant bar-
room or tobacco shop wtiich agrees

own put in fancy packages bearing
the name of the place whre the

greatly increased. It take.- about

work is now done by -machinery

A Novel Restaurant
A v student of dietetics has
opened a novel restaurant in New
York. He agrees with bir Henry
Thompson that erroneous habits
of eating do more mischief than
the habitual use of alcoholic
drinks. These he seeks to correct.
He hopes to enable every one of
lis customers to live as long as
Luigi Cornaro who began dieting
himself at 40 years and lived to
be over 100. "Fresh air pure wa
ter and simple food" is his mot
to. His rule is one dish a day and
different dish every day for a
fortnight. 1 his man s bill or tare
the simplest ever seen. On
Mondav the only dish thereon is
corned beef hash with a poached
egg on top as Nash & Cook
used to make it in the old Times
building and as no one e'.se seems
to be able to makeit now. On
Tuesday you will find honey-
corned tripe stewed in cream with
green pepper finely chopped.
Fhe Wednesday dish is chicken
potpie. rneo rouna steaic is
served on Thursday with just
nough "chaw" in it to move the
teeth. There are no pre-digested
oods in this restaurant. On Fri
day there is a codfish chowder
that makes j'our mouth water. It
contains only the whitest parts 01
the cod some chopped potatoes
an onion or two and a green pep
per. You- will find for Saturday
feast Southdown mutton steaks
broiled.
