Wheh We Make Poverty a Crime
No we are not civilized yet.
We preach human kindness and
liberty and freedom and a lot of
things that sound good and that
we think we mean but
Listen!
We have a great fear that un-
desirables will make this country
their home. We would shut them
out and we have gone at it in such
a clumsy way that we have made
poverty a crime.
So the other day among a herd
of humans who were to be deport-
ed at New York because they pos-
sessed less than the required
amount of money to make them
eligible to citizenship was found
Don Emmanuel Contravas E.
Corke" and old man of 70. He
didn't look like an anarchist. His
face was a picture of innocence and
intelligence. He was neat and
clean.
He was also all but penniless and
the law in big letters to such as
he says "GO BACK."
They found in his portolfo auto-
graph letters from Queen Victoria
M. Loubet then president of
than $4000000000. against $345-
000000 in 1904. A million men
were drawn by the war from pro-
ductive industry yet those at home
were able to supply army and navy
and still have an increased volume
of goods to export.
Writing from Abyssinia a corre-
spondent says: "Quaint customs
prevail in these parts. When a
father is getting on in years the
son bids him climb into a tree and
jump down from the branches. If
the old man staggers on lauding
the son spears him on the spot; his
usefulness is over."
Johnny Milne a JCickapoo lin-
guist and philosopher whose real
name is Man-Me-Qua-Che-Ma-Che-Mah-Net
and who can speak 10
languages has been in Washington
in the interest of the Mexican
branch of his tribe. He is said to
be the most accomplished Indian
linguist.
Unslaked lime is usetul in pre

a cultivated gentleman. :
He was just poor that is all.
Of course he was taken care of
and spared further humiliation .

! According to statistics of Alpine
accidents during 1905 the number
' of English who have lost their lives
by foolhardiness on the Alps is
surpassed by several other nations.
The total number of accidents was
165 of which no fewer than 65
were fatal and of these the greater
number of accidents happened to
Swiss and German climbers.

How It Worked.
Several years ago a farmer drove
to Buffalo to buy from a wholesale
firm a bill of goods for his country
store. After coming down stairs
and while waiting for his good to
be packed he noticed several men
using the speaking tube.
After a while his curiosity got
the better of him and he asked the
proprietor what that thing was.
"A speaking tube" said the pro-
proprietor. "Speak to some one
upstairs and see how it works-"
"What will I say?" said the
farmer going over to the tube.
"Oh say anything you like"
said the proprietor.
"Hey!" shouted the. farmer.
"Are the goods Mr. Parsons of
Williamsville ordered ready?"
"Yes" said the man upstairs
"the goods are ready but we are
looking the old skinflint up. We
think he is kind of shaky."
