-LA LOMITA-
IRRIGATED LANDS
FOR SALE
op
In August 1907. W. P. Stites Ed Pullion W. E.
Nickerson and Ed C. Dustin Sec'y Texas Onion
rowers' Association rented of W. S. Dougherty
107 acres of land for an onion crop at $20 per acre.
adjoining La lomita ranch- During September
October and November they plowed and prepared
their land and planted their seed beds. During De-
cember they transplanted their onions to the field.
May 4th 1908 87 cars of onions were shipped av-
eraging 500 or more crates per car and selling at
$1 and better per crate. It is safe to estimate the
returns from 'these 107 acres of onions to be not
less than $43500 for a crop which it took less than
9 months to produce and sell. The above parties
have sir.ce bought land from La Lomita ranch. Affi-
davits substantiating this statement will be gladly
furnished by Conway &. Hoit of La Lomita ranch.

Of Association.
The South Texas Gardeners are
coming in a few days to make their

en home of the association. In view
of this fact the citizens of Browns-
ville are energetically making ar-
rangements to extend a cordial wel-

feel welcome. A list is being circu-
lated for the purpose of raising a
subscription to tender the visitors
a barbecue and so far very encour-
aging results have been secured. The
list of subscribers will be published
later.
As a starter the committee has re-"
celved a donation of two fat beeves
for the barbecue which were given
by J. S. McLaughlin in the name of
the enterprising land firm of Conway
and Hoit. With such generous con-
tributions as this the ' committee
which is in charge of the work of se-
curing subscriptions for the barbecue
feels that it will be possible to do
something handsome for the enter-
tainment of the gardeners.

denhall the secretary pro tern of the
L. R. G. V. C. club are in charge of
the subscription list. Any who wish
to contribute towards this commend
able move should see these gentlemen
It Is expected that there will be be-
tween 200 and 300 in attendance
at the meeting. Our citizens can

be in every way to have these peo-
ple visit the city. Composed of active
energetic and intelligent men who
spend their money freely and are do
ing their utmost to push the develop-
ment of this country in the most
practical way the city of Brownsville
should be proud to receive the asso-
ciation and our people will no doubt
do their part nobly towards entertain
ing them.
The meeting will open on Friday
July 17 and continue in session until
Saturday afternoon. Announcement
of the program was published in The
Herald yesterday.

This will greatly improve the railway

Beautiful Thought
"Why do you weep?" I said
For tears were in her eyes.
She looked up timidly
Quite taken by surprise.
Then through .her falling tears
A tender smile revealing
She simply pointed to
The onions she was peeling.

Convention.
Denver Col. July 8. The assem-
blage of the democratic hosts in the
great convention auditorium yester-
day afternoon was an event long to
be remembered. Ten thousand per-
sons filled the building when the
gavel in the hands of National Chair-
man Thomas Taggart called the con-
vention to order.
It was an inspiring scene. The
great amphi-theater was packed to its
utmost capacity the thousand and
two delegates occupying the center
and back of them the thousand alter-
nates while the remainder were spec-
tators filling tier after tier of seats.
A very large proportion of the spec-
tators were women. Flags and bunt-
ing are on all sides.
Temporary Chairman Theodore
Bell's address sounded the keynote
of the campaign in an arraignment
of the republican party for its faults
both of commission and of omission.
The evil of child labor the corrupt
use of money in political campaigns
and the duty of democracy to exert
itself in behalf of retrenchment and
reform were dwelt upon.
It is generally conceded that the
plaform will be conservative.
Resolutions of respect to the mem
ory of the late Grover Cleveland were
presented by I. J. Dunn of Omaha
and adopted by rising vote.
Besides the foregoing and the roll
call of states no other business was
transacted yesterday as the conven-
tion was adjourned in respect to
Cleveland. '
