The snack bars and soda foun-
tains are youth's favorite hang-
out*. The meals in most lunch-
rooms are less than the price of
a hot dog and a soft drink. After
a survey, nutritionists found that
out of 1S00 students only 90 ate in
the cafeteria. The students flock-
ed to the nearby snack bars, juke
joints and hot dog stands. Out
of 80 students in a caferteria, on-
ly two were drinking milk.
Everybody knows that nutrition
is the basis of health, and that
nourishing food is never more
important than in the formative
years when the bones and tissues
that must serve us through a life-
time are being manufactured.
Still, as one physician stated, "We
are allowing our adolescents to
cultivate deficiencies that can hurt
them the rest of their lives."
Rusk Band 34
Short of Ideal
Boosters Say
The Rusk Band Boosters Club,
after a meeting early this week,
reported its recommendations and
plans for bringing the Rusk High
School band to the maximum per-
formance.
According to a detailed analy-
sis compiled by the organization,
the band lacks 34 members to
bring it to the ideal 77-member
band. There are 45 members at
present.
However, it is short only 12 in-
strumenta for t he organisation's:
suggested ideal instrumentation.
The boosters have ordered two
valve trombones at a cost of $210
each, leaving 10 instruments need-
ed.
Instruments still needed are:
Bass horn, $388.50; 2 baritones,
$380; 2 bassoons $560; 2 bass clari-
nets $325; 1 alto clarinet $312.
According to the organization,
the plan is given "that members
of the Band Boosters can have an
accurate picture of where we are
and what we lack to reach the
ideal."
The organization revealed that
it had made substantial headway
in improving the RHS band in its
first year. Besides the two trom-
bones on order, it has had over-
hauled a bass drum, has purchas-
ed new plumes and belts for band
uniforms, has purchased two ma-
jorette uniforms and has had re-
paired 21 hats.
