INDIANS
(Continued From Paae One)
"We are a small nation and
the Astronauts have been In-
vited to visit many large na-
tions," Mr. Fain said,speak-
ing for the chief. "But we
were not always small, and
we are still big in heart and
spirit. It will be appropriate
that here, on the last spot
where men once worshipped
the moon, there be placed a
permanent imprint of the feet
that first walked on the
moon."
Earlier in the ceremony. It
had been explained that the
Alabamas once worshipped
the moon, but now know that
God made the moon. Medicine
Man Jack Battise enacted a
prayer for strength, Health,
and good hunting, once add-
ressed by the Indians to the
new moon.
vfter the ritual preparation
Fain presented the Chiefs with
a stone ax or tomahawk sign
ifying authority and the res.
ponsibillty to protect the tribe
a bow and arrows to Indicate
that the chiefs must provide
anil care tor the tribe, and a
pipe for the kind of peace that
will "make all men broth
ers."
The new chief is a great
great grandson ot a chiet and
the nephew ol a chief.
Feathered headdresses were
placed on the Chiefs' heads
and they were given feather-
tipped staffs to "help them on
the journey through life."
At intervals during the cer
emony, braves in colorful
feather decked regalia did
Indian dances as drummers
chanted.
At the outset of the cere
monies, Dempsey Henley ol
Liberty, chairman of the Ind
lan Commission, welcomed
the visitors. Speaking brief
ly were Benton Musslewhlte,
representing Senator Ralph
