As the saying goes. "It's
good to be back home
again." after attending the
National County Agricul-

Washington D C. area

other accomplishments,
was a fairpe'r: and it was
certainly interesting to see
his home and gardens at
Mt. Vernon. We also
enjoyed Thomas Jeffer-
son's home Monticello,
which they told us he
designed and built himself.
Although he was a lawyer
by trade, he was a self
taught engineer and also
designed one of the first
mold board plows, or what
most of us call the "turning
plow." And Jamestown,
where the first settlers
landed in America, was

duction and trade of
tobacco as the basis of its

existence. I also had an
opportunity to see a lot of
good corn, soybeans, apple
orchards and a few peach
orchards on the trip, as
well as lots of small
patches of tobacco.
America got its start
with agriculture as a base,
and it might be well for us
to remember that this
hasn't really changed
much-Agriculture is still
considered by many to be
the backbone of our nation.
I came back home to
some disturbing news.
Cherokee County had two
cases of screwworms last
week, both of them being in
the Alto area. Positive
screwworm identification
was given to samples sent
in by Tom Ball and Bill
Warner. I talked with Tom
Ball on Monday of this
week and he said they had
been notified that steril
flies would" be dropped on
Tuesday.
In talking with Sidney
Thrash, local representa-
tive of the Texas Animal
Health Commission, he
says that the steril fly drop
will not include the entire
county, but only the area
. where the two cases of
worms were identified. Mr.
Thrash says* that screw-
worm cases have been
found in both Oklahoma
and Arkansas and these
areas are using large
numbers of the steril flies.
So they don't have enough
to do the entire county.
Mr. Thrash also says that
if owners of the affected
herds and adjoining herds
pen their cattle, the cattle
will be sprayed free of
charge by the Texas
Animal Health Commis-
sion to further reduce the
possible spreading of the
screwworm fly.
Mr. Thrash says that no
additional cases have
shown up in Houston
County following spraying
and fly drop when 3 cases
were identified about 30
days ago there.
Now that worm cases
have actually been identi-
fied in the county, frequent
inspection of cattle and
treating all wounds with a
fly repellent will be a must.
Also collecting samples of
any worms found and
sending them in for
positive identification will
allow the Texas Animal
Health Commission to give
immediate attention to any
positive cases.
Just a reminder that
September 3 (Friday of this
week) is the last date td
sign up with the ASCS
office for cost share on fall
conservation practices.
They are paying on (1)
planting permanent past-
ures, (2) over-seeding
pastures with legumes and
(3) application of limestone
on grasses and legumes.
