Charlie Maple...
...TSR's new PR rep
Another of Maple's goals
for the park is to develop a
slide and tape presentation
which can be used when
speaking to civic
organizations in the area.
Setting up exhibit booths
at travel, boat and
recreation shows in the
major metropolitan areas
in Texas is also on the
agenda for Maple's efforts
to promote the train and
the Rusk/East Texas area
for tourism.
"We've got a lot of work
ahead towards getting this
thing (the train) cracked
up ready to go. Already
we've been receiving
reservations for groups
wanting to ride the train."
Maple said.
With the tourist season at
the train gearing up March
21, time is really running
short. So far, Maple has at-
tended Rusk's Chamber of
Commerce board of direc-
tor's meeting and has been
welcomed to the city. Ef-
forts to reach the Texas
newspapers has been star-
ted by attempts to obtain a
listing of all the
newspapers in Texas from
the Texas Press
Association.
"We've been thinking
about sending out news
releases about the group's
ridirfg the trains and where
they are from," Maple
said.
One of the features in-
cluded on this year's 14-
mile round trip ridé from
the Rusk depot is the swit-
ching of the steam engine
pulling the train via an
almost 80-year-old tur-
ntable.
According to Curtis
Pruett, superintendent of
the park, research has
placed the date of the
manufacture of the tur-
ntable at 1901 by the
Chicago Bridge Co. The
turntable has been in
operation in Oklahoma
City, Ok., and in Paris,
Texas.
Maple, who worked for
three years with the
Jacksonville Chamber of
Commerce until just recen-
tly, was raised mostly in
West Texas. He has a jour-
nalism degree from Texas
Tech University in Lub-
bock and worked with daily
and weekly newspapers
throughout Texas and
Louisiana for 15 years
before entering into cham-
ber work.
"I think this position will
allow me to draw heavily
on my background, my ex-
perience," the superinten-
dent said. "We have a very
unique park which makes a
1 'good family outing and a
"•relaxed weekend, with the
parks and camping
facilities nearby.
join
_ "So many people in our
area know just vaguely
about the train." he said.
"1 see my job as changing
that."
Maple's first exposure to
the state historical park
was when he did a feature
story on the ride for the
Shreveport Times, a paper
he worked for as state
editor.
"Trains enthrall me, but
I haven't been around them
much," Maple said. "I'm
having to learn the nomen-
clature now."
Maple and his wife and
youngest son will live in the
superintendent's house at
the Palestine depot. Maple
also has a married
daughter who is a phar-
macist in Houston, a
married son who will soon
be a first lieutenant at Ft.
Hood and another son who
is a freshman at Baylor
University.
