ET Vacation Guides Promote
*Big Time in Texas' Tourist Theme
The Texas Seaquicentennial
edition of the East Texas Vacation
Guide, just issued by the East
Texas Chamber of Commerce, in-
vites the visitor and native alike to
"have a big time in Texas." A vir-
tual textbook for travelers in the
eastern third of Texas, it's free for
the asking.
The region's diversity of
traditions and geography is
described in 116 pages of facts, fun
and folklore. This information is in-
tended as a strong lure to former
natives to return for reunions and
homecomings during a special part
of the State's 150th birthday party,
East Texas Homecoming *86.
Covering 71 counties plus Cad-
do/Bossier Parishes in Louisiana,
the guide contains highway maps of
the region, data on dozens of lakes
and hundres of attractions, 111 host
cities and a Texas Sesquicentennial
calendar of hundreds of events, all
packed into a digest-size volume.
Featured in the guide are Cherokee
County, Rusk, Alto and Jackson-
ville and their tourist attractions.
Vacationers and weekend
travelers will find the guide's six
regions of particular interest. East
region is highlighted by a highway
map and offers many types of at-
tractions, even wide varieties of
cooking. Water buffs enjoy ac-
tivities from canoeing on wooded
creeks to paddlewheel luxury to
Gulf fishing.
Recreational and sightseeing in-
formation is provided in the guide's
feature articles, its advertisements
on cities and attractions and its
detailed compilations. The latter
include a directory of lakes,
marinas and campgrounds, plus a
listing of lodging and dining places.
More than 400,000 copies of the
East Texas Vacation Guide and Of-
ficial East Texas Heritage Trail
Maps are distributed by trail hosts,
volunteer East Texas Tourism
leaders and the East Texas Cham-
ber of Commerce. Tens of thousan-
ds of copies are taken by interested
persons visiting 17 sports and
vacation shows in various parts of
the United States.
The new East Texas Vacation
Guide may be obtained free at any
of the state's 12 Tourist Bureaus, at
auto club offices throughout the
nation and at more than 100 host
cities, lakes and attractions in the
71 counties of East Texas. Of,
copies may be ordered direct from
East Texas Chamber of Commerce,
Box 1592, Longview, TX 75606, by
enclosing $1 to help cover mailing
costs.
Tourism is Texas' second largest
industry, next only to petroleum,
and now produces more than $14.5
billion in state revenes. East Texas
accounts for $8.1 billion of that
total, far outranking other areas,
according to Dr. Nancy C. Speck of
Nacogdoches, East Texas Chamber
President. The East Texas
program, guided by its self-
supporting Tourist Development
Department, was founded in 1963
and is now the largest tourism
program undertaken by any cham-
ber of commerce in the United
States.
"Tourism means people coming
to visit ... in millions," points out
James I. Perkins of Rusk, ETCC
tourist chairman. "People coming
to phy taxes to our towns and our
state. In millions. Creating jobs.
People coming to enjoy themselves
in our home country."
