Events Calendar features Texas hospitality
Friendliness and Texas-style
hospitality have been in evidence
for well over 100 years, as Texans
played host at rodeos, barbecues,
county fairs and other festive oc-
casions.
This year, visitors can join in the
102nd National Cow-Calling Contest
at Miami; the 117th Juneteenth
Picnic & Trail Ride at St. John
Colony; the 133rd Agricultural
Society Barbecue at Cat Spring, or
the 134th Prazka Pout at Praha.
The latest "Texas Events Calen-
dar," just released by the State
Department of Jlighways and
Public Transportation, spotlights
these as well as other century-old
celebrations, and more than 1,000
other ways Texans have fun in
summer.
Spanning the months of June,
July and August, the information
filled Calendar lists everything
from international art festivals and
major cultural events to down-
home country fun. In June,
National Fink Kay restores honor
and dignity to a grand old name.
While at Noonday's Onion Festival,
contestants bring tears of laughter
or sorrow while peeling onions.
In Kountze, a week-long salute to
Texas' newest agricultural product
offers outdoor wilderness fun at the
Thicket County Picnic & Blueberry
Eatin' Meetin'. And anglers try
their luck at a variety of fishing
tournaments, running the gamut
from the Deep-Sea Roundup in Port
Aransas billed as the "grandaddy
of them all," to the Carp Fishing
Tournament in Granbury.
Packed with art, boat, and stock
shows, horse races and rodeos, and
a great variety of musicals and
theatre productions under the stars,
the Summer "Texas Evenst Calen-
dar" tells the where and when of it
all. Free individual copies of the
summer fun listing can be picked
up at any of the 12 Texas Tourist
Bureaus or by writing "Texas
Events Calendar," P.O. Box 5064,
Austin, Tx. 78763.
The SFA Summer Repertory
Theatre's 1989 season, beginning
June 29 at Rusk, features three
Broadway comedies, including a
Pulitzer prize winner, "Crimes of
the Heart."
The season opener, Neil Simon's
"Star Spangled Girl," thrusts a
southern belle into New York and
the middle of her neighbors' dream
of publishing an underground
newspaper.
The show is under the direction of
Dr. C.W. Bahs, chairman of the
Theatre Dept., and will be perfor-
med June 29, 30 and July 1 in the
Cherokee Civic Theatre in Rusk.
The show will continue July 5, 6,14
and 15 in Turner Auditorium,
located in the Griffith Fine Arts
Bldg. at Stephen F. Austin State
University.
The company will also perform
Beth Henley's "Crimes of the
Heart," the story of an unusual trio
of sisters in a small southern town.
"Crimes" will be performed July
7,8,19 and 20 under the direction of
guest director Jan Jones, in the
Turner Auditorium.
"Vanities," by Jack Heifner, will
round out the season. "Vanities"
follows three Texas girls through
three stages of life. Beginning with
high school and the day John Ken-
nedy was killed and on through
college, "Vanities" presents the
development of three young girls
into grown women.
Performances will be held July 12
and 13 in Turner Auditorium. In ad-
dition, two dinner theatre perfor-
mances will be offered July 21 and
22 in the Fredonia Convention Cen-
ter.
The acting company consists of
David Bennett, Dana Childs,
Gianine DeFrancesco, Kelly Gar-
vin, Andy Long and Veronica
Russell. Each performer will be
responsible for two roles during the
season's run.
All performances begin at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $5, $3 for students and
senior citizens. Season tickets may
be purchased for the Turner
Auditorium performances only for
$10. Tickets for the Dinner Theatre
performances are $17.50 and in-
clude dinner at the Fredonia.
Advance tickets can be pur-
chased and additional information
received by calling the theatre of-
fice at (409) 568-4003.
