reorganizes regU]ar session
Alto Independent School District's
Board of Trustees met to reorganize
the board following the recent elec-
tion. Mike Low was elected to a
second term as president of the board.
Odis Bryan was re-elected vice-presi-
dentofthebody. Brittain Tilley was
retained as secretary. Board mem-
bers Bryan and Randy Sturrock re-
peated their oath of office prior to
the reorganization of the board.
A rather routine evening was in
store for the Alto Independent School
District Board of Education during
their regular meeting May 19. All
members were present and newly
elected board members Odis Bryan
and Randy Sturrock had been in-
stalled during a special meeting pre-
ceding the regular meeting.

Alto updates
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Pyle of Pasa-
dena spent last week in Altó visiting
with Mrs. Mart Miller, Mrs. Pyle's
mother. The Pyles also visited with
Robert Miller of Portland, Oregon.
Miller is Mrs. Pyle's brother,
Mrs. Mart Miller, of Alto, and son
Robert Miller, of Portland Oregon,
spent Mother's Day weekend visit-
ing in the home of Mrs. Miller's
daughter, Mir. Bill Pyle and family,
in Pasadena, Texas.
Robert Miller, formerly of Alto,
returned to his home in Portland
Oregon. Miller spent the last three
weeks visitinghis mother, Mrs. Mart
Miller, and other relatives and
friends.
MR. AND MRS. JOHNNY A. TOBIAS announce the engagement
and approaching marriage of their daughter, Shannon, to
Ricky Perkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Perkins. The wedding
will be June 11 at the Hilltop Baptist Church in Alto immediately
following the morning worship service. Invitations are extended
through the press to all friends and relatives.

School Board Awards were dis-
tributed for the month of May to
Tracy Qoff, Valedictorian, and Holli
Taylor, Salutatorian. Also receiving
awards were the members of the
State Championship Mile Relay
team, Rontraelle Mumphrey, Fred
Hackney, Draper Skinner, and Clint
Richardson.
The board met with Martha Bos-
ton of East Texas Employment and
Training, and voted unanimously to
participate in the Cherokee County
Cooperative Alternative School.
High School Principal Carol Boyd,
presented the TAAS figures for 1995
which showed marked improvement
over all. Also reported was the fact
that 100% of the 1995 graduating
class has passed TAAS.
The purchase of a lighted informa-
tion sign for the downtown Alto area
was discussed. Further information
is to come before the board.
Faye Nell Monzingo, Elementary
Principal, gave the Bilingual/ESL
report. Alto's program passed with
flying colors.
An attorney has been engaged to
write a letter to the football field
lightingcontractor and engineer con-
cerning the warranty on the sta-
dium lights. A few of the lights are
not working and the contractor is
balking on making good on the war-
ranty.
All para-professional and non-pro-
fessional personnel were hired for
the 1995-96 school year.
Area Deaths
E. R. Bomer
Funeral for E.R. Bomer, 82, of
Montalba, father offormer State Rep.
and now State Insurance Commis-
sioner Elton Bomer, was at 4 p.m.
Tuesday in the Bailey & Foster Fu-
neral Home Chapel with the Rev.
Bud Magfee officiating. Burial was
in Roselawn Park.
Mr. Bomer died Sunday afternoon
in a Tyler hospital. He was born July
3, 1912, in the Bois d'Arc commu-
nity. Mr. Bomer was a farmer, a
member of the Montalba Baptist
Church and the Montalba Masonic
Lodge.
Survivors are his wife, Bessie
Bomer of Montalba; two sonB, Elton
Bomer of Montalba and Roy Bomer
of Mesquite; four sisters, Alice Ayres
of Jacksonville and Era Bostic, Letha
King and Ethylene Marsh, all of
Palestine; a brother, Lawton Bomer
of Palestine; five grandchildren; and
two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Lem Pickle,
Floyd Wilmott, Kevin Wilmott, Dan
Stoldt, Joe Crutcher and Bascom
Bentley.
Edwards Reunion
The Edwards reunion is planned
.or 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. June 3. The
event will be a covered dish meal
and those attending are asked to
bring food. The event will be held at
the Rusk VFW Hall. Signs will be
posted and balloons will mark the
way. For additional information, in-

Memorial to son
Ethel Gasaway will host a special
remembrance honoring her son,
Gary E. Gasaway at her home on FM
1911 in Alto.
She invites family, friends and
loved ones to take time to honor her
beloved son in a Memorial Day Ser-
vice. The event will be held Monday,
May 29 from 12 p.m. unjil. Everyone
is invited she said.
