M.D. Stokes
Services for Meredith Dale (M.D.)
Stokes, 50, of Gallatin, was at 2 p.m.
Thursday in the Wallace-Thomp-
son Funeral Home Chapel with the
Rev. Don Copeland officiating.
Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Stokes died May 16 in a Tyler
hospital. He was born Aug. 19,1944,
in Rusk to George and Olive
Meredith Stokes and was a lifelong
Rusk resident.
He was a member of the Rusk
First United Methodist Church and
the Masonic Lodge in Spring. He
retired as a locomotive engineer fpr
the Texas State Railroad March 31
after 18 years in that position.
Survivors are his wife, Ida Stokes
of Gallatin; a son, George Stokes of
Rusk; a daughter, Laura Stokes of
Rusk; two stepsons, William (Tooter)
O'Dell of Jacksonville and Don
O'Dell of Gallatin; and several aunts,
uncles and cousins.
Pallbearers were Charles (Bob)
Frieda, James Milligan, Weldon
Wallace, Danny Byrd, Aubrey
(Moze) Tinsley, Roger Grahaiji and
Floyd McCullough.
Honorary pallbearers were staff
members of the Texas State Rail-
road.
John William Burran
Funeral for John William Burran,
69, of Rankin, 111. was at 2 p.m
Thursday in the Knapp Funeral
Home in Rankin, 111. The Rev. Doug
Bradley officiated. Burial was in
Union Cemetery.
Mr. Burran died at 2:55 a.m. May
16 at his home. He was born Aug. 5,
1925, in Weches and was a self em-
ployed carpenter. He was a Baptist.
He and his wife, the former Lavon
F. Butler were married on Dec. 11,
1972 in Danville, 111. He was a
Marine veteran.
Survivors are his wife, Lavon
Burran of Rankin; his father, John
L. Burran of Rusk; two brothers,
Leon Burran and LeRoy Burran,
both of Rusk; three daughters,
Dianna Wellman of Kirbyville, and
Helen Brown, both of Kirbyville
and Margaret Grau of Oklahoma
City; two sons; John Fullingium of
Beaumont and Ray Bostick of Hous-
ton; 14 grandchildren; six great-
grandchildren.
Mr. Burran was preceded in death
by his mother, Lila Henley Burran,
a brother and a sister.

man, 62, of Rusk, were at 2 p.m.
Sunday in West Union Baptist
Church with Rev. K. B. Clater, Rev.
James Wickware, Rev. Darryl
Cranford, and Rev. Herman officiat-
ing.
Burial was in Rusk Memorial Cem-
etery under direction of Community
Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
Mr. Foreman died Monday in
Rusk. He was born in Rusk and was
member of West Union Baptist
hurch.
He is survived by one son and
d ighter-in-law, Lee Edward and
Li ia Foreman of Dallas; his mother,
Mi y Jane Foreman of Rusk; three
sist rs, Gladys Adams of Lufkin,
Verl ne Carter of Beaumont, and
Donna M. Richard of Kennard; three
brothers, Carl E. Foreman and Ollie
L. Foreman of Rusk, and Lee Earl
Foreman of Jacksonville; two aunts;
two uncles; four grandchildren; and
nieces and nephews.
Pallbearer were Jimmy Lee Fore-
man, Jeff Foreman, Ray Foreman,
Aaron Ware, Donnie Ray Atkins,
Andra Maurice Richard, Larry
Marshall and Eddie Harris.

Funeral services for William
(Elmo) Henderson, 83, of Rusk, were
at 2 p.m. Friday at Memorial Fu-
neral Home in tyler with Dr. Mickey
Williams officiating.
Mr. Henderson died Tuesday in
Rusk.
He was born in Shreveport, La.,
waB a retired grocery store owner
and member of the Assembly of God
Church in Rusk.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Oddie Hillman Henderson of Rusk;
two sons, Bill Henderson of Pasa-
dena, and Bobby Joe Henderson of
Beaumont; one daughter, Patricia
Miller of Rusk; four sisters, Melba
Wyatt, Dorothy Myers and Winnie
Wright ofiyier, and Lucille Eastman
of Arlight; nine grandchildren; and
11 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Billy Henderson,
Bobby Henderson, Luther Miller,
Dale Wright, Adolphus Wyatt and
Joe Wyatt.
Norris Gardiner
The funeral for Norris Gardiner,
73, of Trinity, formerly of the Bulah
community near Rusk, was at 10
a.m. Saturday in Wallace-Thomp-
son Funeral Home Chapel with the
Rev. Charles Nunnally officiating.
Burial was in Hendrick cemetery.
Mr. Gardiner died Tuesday in
Huntsville. He was born in the Bulah
community, lived in Huntsville 31
years, moved to Trinity in 1987, was
a veteran of World War II and re-
tired in 1984 from the Texas Depart-
ment of Corrections after 28 years as
a security guard.
He is survived by his wife, Nora
Allen Gardiner of Trinity; three
daughters and sons-in-law,,
Charlene and Tracy Saxon of Diboll,
Louise and Rudolph Artherholt of
Trinity, and Carol and Raymond
Carroll of Huntsville; two sisters,
Mamie Durham of Beaumont, and
Mildred Day of Mesquite; one sister-
in-law, Margaret (Sweetie) Gardiner
ofBulah; a brother-in-law, Cecil Scott
of Alto; 11 grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; and nieces and
nephews.
Pallbearers included Terry Bates,
Joseph Allen, Eddie Allen, James
Collins, Leahmon Hassell, and Cecil
Durham.
Honorary pallbearers were
Waymon Durham, David Scott,
Aaron Andrew Mercer, Ikeal
Gardiner, Emmett Holcomb, Lloyd

John M. Reece
Services for John M. Reece, 86, of
Alto were at 11 a.m. May 13, 1995,
in the O.T. Allen & Son Funeral
Home Chapel with the Rev. Odis
Bryan officiating. Burial was in
Simpson Cemetery near Wells.
Mr. Reece died Thursday, May 11,
1995, in a Jacksonville hospital.
He was born March 26, 1909, in
MalakofT, Texas, to John Middleton
and Martha Wilson Reece. He was
the second child of six children.
He came to Cherokee County, Dec.
24,1921, at the age of 12. He and his
family spent his first night at a wagon
yard in Alto.
They lived in several communi-
ties, and he attended school from
Wells to Alto. In 1931 he married
Susan Oliver. He worked at several
jobs in this area, as a mechanic, at a
sawmill. He worked 20 years on the
road for Cherokee County, Precinct
2.
Later in the late 40s or early 50s,
he bought the school teachers house
that was at Barsola when he at-
tended school there. It was moved to
Primrose where he and his family
made their home.
Mr. Reece was preceded in death
by his wife, Susan of 57 years in
1988. Also, his parents, three sis-
ters, Ora Reece-Hicks, Lois Reece
Mettlen, Pearl Reece; one brother,
Grady Reece; one grandson, Mitch
Jackson; and two sons-in-law.
Survivors are two daughters and
one son, Ann and L.M. Jackson of
Centerville, three grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren; Jerry
Blackmon of Alto, five grandchil-
dren and seven great grandchildren;
John Milton and Sue Reece of Alto,
one grandchild; one sister, Miss
Emma Lee Reece of Alto; several
nieces and nephews. Mr. Reece was
a member of the Primrose Baptist
Church.
Pallbearers were Earl Hicks, Alton
Hicks, Roy Hicks, Kyle Hopper, Keith
Jackson and Norman Bobbitt. Hon-
orary pallbearers were Alton Single-
tary and Noble Moake.

William W. Lofland
Funeral for William W. Lofland,
84, of Friendswood, was held at 2
p.m. Monday in the Jack Rowe Ca-
thedral Chapel in League City.
Burial was in Mount Olivet Cem-
etery in Dickinson.
Mr. Lofland died May 18 in Nassau
Bay. He was born June 10,1910, in
Limestone County. He was formerly
of Alto and a member of the Alto
Lions Club, the Abilene Rotary Club
and Kiwanis and was manager of
the Lone Star Gas in Abilene and
Denton for 45 years.
Survivors are his wife of 62 years,
Carrie Lofland of Friendswood; a
son, Bill Lofland of Seabrook; two
sisters, Oleene McLeod of Lovington
and Faye Johnson of Odessa; grand-
children, Leslie Barone, Parker
Lofland, Karen Lofland; and great-
grandchildren, Tiffany and Jessica
Lofland.
