1998 awards lunchon honors RSH employee]
From five years to 30 years,
service by staff members at Rusk
State Hospital was recognized
May 21 during an Appreciation
Day program hosted by the Vol-
unteer Council Community Ser-
vices.
"You're the keys to the success
we've had here," said Jim
Perkins, member of the Mental
Health-Mental Retardation
Board.
He was introduced by Superin-
tendent Buz Parrish who praised
him as a longtime resident of a
pioneer family in Rusk and for
his dedication and hard work as
a member of the MHMR board.
Perkins advised, "We can't rest
on our laurels. There's a lot of
competition from the private sec-
tor for what we offer here." He
expressed regret at the loss of
Don Gilbert as MHMR commis-
sioner but added, "In his new
position with regard to Medicare/
Medicaid funding, he will be our
friend of help."
He was also complimentary of
Gov. George Bush, not just for
his appointment to the MHMR
board, but for the Governor's sup-
port to the board since his service
began.
In his comments of introduc-
tion for State Rep. Todd Staples,
he warned, "This is a time of
challenge and change. Our next
session of the legislature will be
one of the most important ses-
sions ever." He urged his listen-
ers to let Rep. Staples hear from
them by letters, calls and their
support.
Rep. Staples expressed plea-
sure at being present for the oc-
casion. "Good things happen be-
cause you do good work. It is an
honor to represent Cherokee
County in the legislature," he
said. He praised them for their
dedication and persistence. ""I
will make certain the Texas Leg-
islature knows of the good job
you're doing here."
He alluded to the expected an-
nouncement of the recent JCAH
survey at the facility. "This is an
ongoing process. We must con-
tinue the quality care and be
responsive to the change we all
face." He praised them as the
"real heroes," while saluting the
superintendent and administra-
tive staff for work well done.
Rep. Staples stated that one of
the facility's greatest assets is
board member Perkins. He chal-
lenged his audience to be involved
and dedicated. "It is a highly com-
petitive environment, but you can
produce positive results. You've
proven that with your teamwork.
