'Walk Across Texas'
steps into gear March 1
By Linda L. Bear
SPECIAL TO THE CHEROKEEAN/HERALD
Dust off your walking shoes, and
let's "Walk Across Texas" again.
In 1998, 28 teams in Cherokee
County accepted the challenge to
walk and become a part of "Walk
Across Texas." Several teams
made it all the way, and even
headed back.
This year, counties all across the
state have joined the walkers from
EawTexas. " *
'Why are they Walking," you may
wonder. Primarily, for themselves,
and to obtain a healthier lifestyle.
No funds are raised, no fees are
charged.
Hopefully, you can develop the
habit of walking, obtain a healthier
lifestyle, relieve stress and even
increase your time spent commu-
nicating with family and friends.
"Walk Across Texas" is an eight-
week program designed to spark
friendly competitions in Texas and
promote the healthy benefits of
exercise. Heart disease is still
recognized as the number one
health problem in the United
States.
The rise of heart disease could
be significantly reduced by regu-
lar exercise.
The Texas Department of Health
reports the positive effects of physi-
cal activity are not limited to just
lowering the rise of heart disease.
Regular exercise also helps relieve
stress and anxiety, and prolongs
life. / j.
To become part of "Walk Acrtiss
Texas," just get eight people to-*
gether to form a team. Everyone
can walk, even the youngest fam-
ily member, and walking groups
do not have to walk together.
Teams log their miles of walk-
ing, jogging or biking. Each week,
those miles are reported to the
team captain, who then reports to
the Cherokee County Extension
Office. These miles will be posted
on a map at the office.
For additional information, call
the Cherokee County Extension
Office at 903-683-5416 in Rusk.

A national newB story on hepati-
tis B vaccine was aired Jan. 22 on
ABS's 20/20. This story has the
potential to raise public concern
about hepatitis B vaccine safety
and the ACIP universal vaccina-
tion recommendation, said Walter
A. Orenstein, M.D., M.P.H. in a
letter to health department offices
throughout the state.
Current information on hepati-
tis and the hepatitis B vaccine also
can be obtained by contacting the
National Immunization Informa-
tion Hotline 1-800-232-2522 or the
Hepatitis Hotline 1-888-4HEP-
CDC). In addition, information is
available on the NIP website

Hepatitis B is a serious disease,
responsible for an estimated4,000-
5,000 deaths each year in the
United States due to cirrhosis and
liver cancer. Hepatitis B vaccine
prevents hepatitis B disease and
its serious consequences. This is
the first anti-cancer vaccine. Use
of the hepatitis B vaccine and
other vaccines is strongly en-
dorsed by the medical scientific
and public health communities as
a safe and effective way to pre-
vent disease and death. The vac-
cines have been shown to be very
safe when give to infants, chil-
dren and adults and there has
been no confirmed evidence that
indicates that hepatitis B vaccine
can cause chronic illnesses.
Cases of unusual illnesses fol-
lowing vaccines are most often
related to other causes and not
related to a vaccine. Whenever
large number of vaccines are
given, some adverse event will
occur coincidentally after vacci-
nation and be falsely attributed
to the vaccine. Anyone believing
they have had a possible reaction
or adverse health effect from a
vaccine should report it to their
health care provider. The Vaccine
event Reporting System (1-800-
822-7967) receives reports from
health care providers and others
about vaccine side effects.
