Four-year-old Michael Eckerman came up empty-handed Saturday
morning at Rusk State Park's Kids Fishing Day. "He tried hard,
and even caught some moss," his mom, Lana Eckerman, said.
The state pond was stocked last week with 2,200 rainbow trout.

Welcome to Rusk
Jane Plagens casually mentioned she col-
lects mystery books. One room is entirely
lined with shelves of mystery books, about
what one would consider a decent collec-
tion. But this was just a drop in the bucket.
As I was shown through
her lovely home, I saw
shelves and shelves of books
in every room. She could give
Barnes and Noble competi-
tion any day. She Baid she
had actually read very few
of them, but the way she
rounds off iigures, that may
mean she has only read, say
a thousand or so?
Jane has five children:
Martha, Beverly, Amy,
Russell and Connie. She also has five grand-
children. Her brother, Richard Wright, and
his wife live in Ennis.«Jane did bookkeeping
for a couple of apartment complexes for 10
years.
She later met and married W. F. (Slim)
Plagens. They lived on land in Tomball,
previously owned by Slim's great-grandfa-
ther. Slim was a big, healthy, six foot seven
inch, fun-loving sort of guy. He and Jane
had a good life together. They were married
for fiv.e years, but the last two and a half
years were clouaed as Slim's health began
to deteriorate. He died in January 1998.
Jane's cousins, Midge Goins and Jo Etta
Erwin, influenced her in the decision to
move to Rusk. Midge's mom and Jane's
mom were sisters, and their grandfather
was a Methodist minister.
Jane will be getting back into church,
Methodist, of course, as soon as she has
recovered from recent surgery.
Sewing is another of Jane's pleasures.
And she, like her cousin Midge, loves an-
tiques. Jane's mother had a collection of
more than 2,000 pairs of earrings. After
sharing the collection with about a dozen
family members, Jane still has five frames,
measuring 18 x 24 inches, of earrings.
