president of Lon Morris Col-
lege in Jacksonville was at 2
p.m. Monday, Dec. 6, in the Lon
Morris College chapel with the
Rev. Dr. Pat Day, the Rev. Dr.
Don Benton, the Rev. Dr. Bill
Jones, the Rev. Dr. Hooper Hay-
good, the Rev. Roddy Bland and
the Rev. Sara Barbareé officiat-
ing, Arrangements were under
the direction of Autry Funeral
Home.
A private graveside service
was held at Holly Tree Ceme-
tery. Arrangements were under
the direction of Autry Funeral
Home of Jacksonville.
Dr. Lee (lied suddenly at his
home Thursday, Dec. 2. He Was
born Jan. 4, 1948, in Liberty.
Dr. Lee was a United Meth-
odist minister and served
churches for 25 years before
becoming president of Lon
Morris College.
He served churches in Lanev-
ille, Kilgore, Mt. Pleasant, Tex-
arkana, Greggton-Longview,
and Jasper. He also served ns
director of the Wesley Founda-
tion at Kilgore College and as
a youth director at churches
in Gilmer, Longview and Hen-
derson.
He was a graduate of Lon
Morris College and Stephen
F. Austin State University. He
earned his Master of Theology
degree from Southern Method-
ist University andhis Doctorate
of Ministry degree from McCor-
mick Theological Seminary in
Chicago, 111. He was a 2003
inductee into Phi Theta Kappa
Texas Presidents Hall of Honor;
recording artist, author, nation-
ally known speaker, trainer and
consultant.
He received many honors,
including, recipient of the
Howard Grimes Award for
Excellence in Christian Edu-
cation. Under Dr. Lee's leader-
ship, three of the churches he
served received the Kenneth
Copeland Evangelism Award
for Excellence in Evangelism
and Church Growth. He was
the recipient of the 1993 Citi-
zen of the Year Award from the
Jasper Chamber of Commerce;
and recipient of the 1993 Good
Scout Award from the Three
Rivers Council No. 578 of Boy
Scouts of America.
He was active in many civic
organizations, including being
a member of the Jacksonville
Economic Development
Corporation, member of the
Board of Directors at Trin-
ity Mother Frances Hospital
in Jacksonville, officer and
member of the board of direc-
tors of Chambers of Commerce
in Kilgore, Mt. Pleasant, Tex-
arkana and Jasper; a graduate
of Leadership Texarkana and
Leadership Longview, serving
as chairman of the curriculum
council and advisory commit-
tees.
He was a director of the
United Way in Kilgore, Mt.
Pleasant, Texarkana and
Longview; a member of the
board of trustees of Lon Morris
College, prior to being named
president; member of the board
of director s of Independent Col-
lege sand Univer sitie s of Texas;
president of Texas Eastern
Athletic Conference; member
of the board of directors of the
National Association of private
two-year colleges; member of
the National Speakers' Asso-
ciation; and 2003 Outstanding
Lon Morris College Alumni.
Dr. Leeis survived by his wife
of 34, years, Nancy; a daughter,
Carrie Lee; a son and daughter-
in-law, Craig and Terra Lee; his
mother, Sarah Lee; one sister,
Marilyn Robinson; a brother,
Mike Lee; and Several nieces
and nephews.
The family requests memori-

County. He attended Lone
Star pubhc school and was a
Jacksonville resident. He was a
retired truck driver and pastor
at Pine Hill Church of God in

Mrs. Williams died Dec. 3 in
Las Vegas. She moved there in
2001 from San Antonio, where
she resided for 20 years. She
was born in Atoy and moved to
Rusk at an early age. She grad-
uated from Rusk High School.
She was the first woman to be
elected Cherokee County Trea-
surer, serving for almost eight
years. She and her husband,
Ernest, moved to Mc Kin new
where she was employed with
the American Red Cross from
1949-58. She was a Baptist.

La. He was born Jan. 5, 1953,
in Rusk to Arthur Daniel and
Elnore Heath Clifton. He hved
all of his life in Cushing and was
a Christian. He graduatedfrom

McCune, 88, of Jacksonville,

Mrs. McCune died Nov. 30
in Jacksonville. She was born
Oct. 4, 1916, in Douglasville.

for 30 years. She also worked
as an assistant coordinator for
the Volunteer Services and as
a social worker for Rusk State

She served as president of the
Rusk Business and Professional
Women's Club, chairman of the
East Texas Group ofthe National
Association of Bank Woman and
treasurer ofthe La ches Auxiliary
at East Texas Medical Center in
Rusk.
David Clinton
Cushing High School in 1971,
was a self-employed welder for
many years and a member of
the Pipe Liners Union No. 798.
He was preceded in death by his
parents. Survivors are his daugh-
ter and son-in-law. Heather and
Mark Malott of Nacogdoches; a
son. Ricky Clifton of Central
Heights; his wife, "Miss Janise"
of Cushing; two sisters. Donna
Fernandes of Nacogdoches and
Syble McCune

Shop, was a homemaker and
a member of the Craft Baptist
Church.
Preceding her in death
were her husband, Harold B.
McCune; a brother, Harvey O.
Lewis; and a sister, Leathea

ber of Commerce, Cherokee
County Heritage Association
and Cherokee Civic Theatre.
She moved to Tyler in 1994,
where she was a member of the
Southern Oaks Baptist Church.
Preceding her in death were her
husband, William L. Horn; a
brother and a sister.
Survivors are special friends,
Charles and Paula Smith of
Tyler, Stacy Smith of Houston;
and Ivarylyn Goodman of San
Antonio; cousins and friends.

Mr. Handy died Nov. 30in Tyler.
He was born March 18, 1945, in
Freeze, Va. He had resided in
Rusk for eight years. Formerly
of Jacksonville, he attended Cal-
vary Baptist Church. He was a
truck driver, an Army veteran of
the Vietnam War.
Survivors are two daughters,
Tina Smith and Jennifer Handy,
both of Winston Salem, N.C.;
and a special friend, Ruth Gray
of Rusk. Pallbearers were men
of the Calvary Baptist Church
in Rusk.

Funeral for James Oscar
(Pete) Vaughn, 87, of Rusk was
at 3 p.m. Saturday at Thomp-
son Funeral Home chapel in
Jacksonville with the Rev. Don
Copeland officiating. Burial was
in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Vaughn died Dec. 1 in a
Jacksonville hospital. He was
born Jan. 13,1917, in Cherokee
County, was a rancher, a Pen-
tecostal and a Mason of Euchd
Lodge No. 45. Survivors are a
brother, Clyde Vaughn of Rusk;
two sisters, Laura Wyatt of
Lufkin and Ruby Gentry of
Rusk, nieces and nephews.
Nephews and friends served
as pallbearers.
Preceding him in death were
his parents and a brother.
Survivors are his wife. Vera
Mae Reed Story of J acksonville;
