Rusk athletes perform
weH in spring sports
Track athletes qualify
for regional meet
The Rusk Eagles and Lady
Eagles performed well at the
District 21-3Atrack meet held
recently in Palestine.
Several Rusk athletes have
qualified for Region III track
and field championship to be
heldinHumble April 29-30. The
athletes qualified for regional
by finishing in the top three
at district.
Girls qualifiers from Rusk
include: Carmen Carroll, pole
vault, second place, 7 feet, 6
inches: Amanda Sessions, long
jump, second place 15 feet, 10
inches and third place, in the
100-meter dash with a time of
13:22: April Shedd was third
in the 1,600-meter dash with
a time of 5:48.8.
Boys regional qualifiers
include: Brad Guidry, first
place, discus, 160 feet, 10
inches: Jason Turney, discus,
second, 144 feet, 6 inches:
Justin Sturns, second place,
100-meter dash, 11:=52: Cody
Glenn, longjump, secondplace,
21 feet, 2 inches; 400-meter
relay team of Gerald Attaway,
Glenn, Rashieed Jefiery and
Sturns with a time of 44:1,
third place.
Alternates on the 400-meter
relay team at regional will be
Guidry and Bobby McDuff.
In the district boys track
meet, Palestine was first
place. Rusk was fourth scor-
ing 61 points.
Richard Tucker is the Rusk
head track coach.
Kimberly Ocker 1 Oth at state
powerlifting event
Rusk senior lifter Kimberly
Ocker was 10th in a field of 35
lifters in the the 123.5 pound
class at the state powerlifting

meet held in Ki Ileon.
Ocker won district and
regional titles. Ocker Was the
only member of the Rusk team
to advance to the state meet.
The powerlifting teams are
coached by Chris Dolan and
Wayne Larson.
Golf team places fourth at
district tournament
The Rusk golf team finished
fourth in the District 21-3A
tournament.
The Palestine A team won
first with the Palestine B team
taking second while Crockett
was third and Rusk in fourth
place.
Rusk scores include: Brent
Jones, 79-82-161: Brian Rai-
born, 82-81-163: Pax Richey,
85-92-177: John Slover 88-90-
178: Cord Stover, 90-91-181.
Marks Lanham is the Rusk
golf coach.
Hackney signs with SFA

Alto standout athlete Monique Hackney (center) signs a full scholarship to attend
Stephen F. Austin State University on a track scholarship. Seated on the front row
are her parents, Robert and Patsy Hackney; on the back row, Alto athletic director
Marty Murr and Alto track coach Mildred Brown. Ms. Hackney recently won five
gold medals in the district 21-2A track meet. She is a junior Olympic qualifier in
the long jump and ranked fourth in the nation.

The Rusk Eagles and Lady
Eagles sphtrecent District 21-
3A contests and stayed in the
playoff races.
The Eagles had an exciting
home game edging Crockett 7-6
in a nailbiter played April 12.
Josh Hubbard got the win in
relief. He allowed no earned
runs and struck out two and
walked three.
Brad Guidry had three hits
including a double and run
batted in. Colby Pratz, Tim
Hicks and Seth Daniel had
two hits each.
Rusk could not move up in
the standing after suffering a
3-2 loss in Palestine.
Pratz was tagged with the
pitching loss,
At the plate Pratz had two
hits while Tim Hicks, Guidry
and Daniel had one hit each.
Rusk will host Hudson at 6
p.m. Eriday.
The Eagles are currently in
second place in the district
race.
The Lady Eagles took recent
wins over Crockett, Palestine
and Hudson.
Rusk defeated Crockett by
a 1-0 score. The Lady Eagles
beat Palestine 6-3 on Friday
and at home on Saturday edged
Hudson, 5-4.
Sierra Smithwasthe winning
pitcher in all three games.
Top hitters included Smith,
Whitney Conner. Valerie Dil-
liard, Rachel Hicks and Hillary
Hugghins.
The Lady Eagles play at
Central at 6 p.m. Friday.
SPORTS
Basketball camp taking
applications
Applications are being evaluated for
the Ten Star All Star Summer Basketball
Camp.
The camp is open to boys and girls ages
10-19 and is invitation only.
The closest camp in this area is in
Commerce, Texas.

North American Youth
sports holds basketball
tourney
North American Youth Sports
announced today that they will hold their
annual spring youth basketball tourna-
ment at Central High School in Pollok
May 13-15.
The tournamentwill feature 10 different
brackets.
All grades are based on the grade in
which a student is currently enrolled.
The entry fee is $95 and guarantees
each team a minimum of two games.

Rusk Chamber of
Commerce tourney Saturday
The Rusk Chamber of Commerce
fourth annual golf tournament is set
for Saturday.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. at
Birmingham Forest golf course.
Cherokee County Motor
Sports events set
Cherokee County Motor Sports
will hold a NHRA bracket race on
Saturday.
On Sunday the course will host
Muscle Car Challenge competition.
Alto Sports Banquet slated
May 21 at cafeteria
Alto standout male and female ath-
letes and coaches will be honored in the
upcoming sports banquet May 21.
The event will begin at 7 p.m. at the
school cafeteria.
Rusk Sports Banquet set
The Rusk Sports Banquet is slated
for May 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the junior high
cafeteria.
Coaches will introduce athletes and
present awards. For more information

in the recent 7-6 home win over Crockett. Hubbard has an
undefeated record for the year.

Alto's girls track team took

first in six events.
