She was born Oct. 16, 1944, in
Jacksonville. She was a seam-
stress and a member of the Cove
Springs Community Baptist
Church, where she was a Sunday
school teacher.

Nacogdoches in 1970. She
earned her masters in hbrary
science from LeTourneau Uni-
versity and began her teaching
career in Jacksonville as a kin-
dergarten teacher and principal.

Mr. Gillespie died Jan. 10.
He was born Aug. 12, 1914,
in Jacksonville. He was a the-
ater manager for 54 years in
Jacksonville, Henderson, Rusk,
Nacogdoches and Port Arthur.
He served in the U.S. Army.
His first job was at The Clair
Theater which he described
as a "shotgun theater,'' it only
showed westerns.
He began work at the
Palace Theater in downtown
Jacksonville, where he stayed
until 1940.
He popped and sold the
first sack of popcorn there in
1929. Popcorn was introduced
because of the popping machine
in his father's store, which was
placed in the theater. He was a

she worked as the hbrarian of
William B. Travis High School
before completing her teaching
career as the ninth grade center
librarian at Westlake High
School in Eanes ISD.
Mrs. Rogers had several
honors in her career including
an appointment to the Texas
Skill Standards Board by then
Governor and now President
George W. Bush. She served on
the ATPE Board of Directors in
the mid 1980s as well as most
regional and local offices in the
early years of ATPE. In 1993,
she was elected president of
the Association of Texas Profes-
sional Educators after serving
as the state secretary and state
vice-president. She also served
on a variety of committees both
at the local school district level
and at the st ate ATPE level. She
is also a member of the Wall of
Honor in ATPE as a past state
president.
