7 years ago, no one cared about 18-month-old child
MARY MCKINNEY
Gallatin
I'm writing in reference
to a trial that took place in
Rusk at the Cherokee County
courthouse the week of Sept.
13-17.
I'm sure everyone has read
about the injustice in the pa-
pers. An 18-month-old baby
did not get justice.
I believe the person or per-
sons who brutally murdered
this baby seven years ago
walked out of the courtroom
free.
Seven years ago, sloppy work
by the Jacksonville Police
Department and the Jackson-
ville Criminal Investigators
Department did nothing for
this 18-month-old baby.
RAYCRYER
They all knew three days
after the child died that it
was a homicide. The medical
examiner from Dalla s called to
Jacksonville to let them know
the child had been brutally
murdered.
Why weren't the only two
people with the child arrested
and charged?
No one could answer this
question. Why wasn't any
evidence collected? No one
knows.
Why did it take seven years
for anyone to finally say, "We
never did take care of this
brutal beating and murder of
this 18-month-old innocent
baby?''
No one could answer this.
Testimony after testimony
and nothing connected this
murder to anyone, Why? Be-
cause seven years ago, no one
cared. No one heard the cry
of an 18-month-old baby for
someone to pay for his death.
1 was on a 12-person jury
that had to let a man go free
because of reasonable doubt,
and no evidence was gathered,
no arrest was made.
Life went on for seven years
except for that 18-month-old
httle boy.
1 hope because of this trial
someone realizes something
needs to be changed.
Ihope thepolice andcriminal
investigators will hear the cry
of this child that was brutally
beaten to death.
This child is out of danger
and he will never feel pain
again. He is in the arms of
Jesus forever.
Rest assured the person who
did this to this baby may have
walked out of that courtroom
free, but he will have to answer
to God one of these days.
The pictures of this baby will
remain in my mind for a long
time. A child forgotten, but is
now loved by Jesus.
This letter is for that child
who was brutally beaten and
murdered. God rest his inno-
cent soul.
Hunting not an act of courage
Rusk
I came from a line of hunter s.
Long ago, I was able to hunt on
the Serengeti in Africa.
However, no mailer how
much the family proclaimed
the merits of tradition or
wrapped the activity in pleas-
ant words, as time went on, it
just didn't work.
It came across like the old
teacher in All Quiet on the
Western Front, trying to instill
in his pupils the glory of war.
A former neighbor, as coun-
try as you get, told me he'd quit
hunting forever, He fought in
Korea and said he'd seen all
the blood and guts he ever
wanted to see.
I'd viewed hunting as a
macho activity. Then, seeing
even httle boys and girls pull
the trigger, I came to see it as
about as macho as a game of
tiddlywinks.
Somehow, God knows how,
I d viewed it as having an ele-
ment of courage. That turned
into seeing it as a cowardly
act—sneaking up on an animal
with less than half our IQ with
a high-tech weapon.
As scientific findings have
greatly reduced the differ-
ences between ourselves and
animals, I even saw it as
depriving animals of a family
member or a friend.
I caution families raising
children. The wall between
the hunters' vision and mine
cannot get so thick with

"Bubba teaching'' that it can-
not crumble or finally be left
with a peep hole.
When that happens, a hor-
rible sight is revealed — one
that engenders lifelong guilt.
Maybe that won't happen to
you or your child — maybe.
