HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1 WHEREAS, Now in its 15th year, the East Texas What-A-Melon
2 Festival offers a refreshing tribute each summer to one of the
3 region's most significant agricultural products; and
4 WHEREAS, Shelby County is a leader among
5 watermelon-producing counties in the Lone Star State, and every
6 year on the second Friday and Saturday in July, approximately
7 10,000 people travel to the county seat of Center and give a boost
8 to the local economy while sampling the mouth-watering melon and
9 participating in a host of fun-filled activities; and
10 WHEREAS, The festival's attractions include a largest
11 watermelon contest, seed spitting, an antique car show, lawnmower
12 races, country music, a carnival, and assorted vendors selling
13 tasty food and unique craft items; and
14 WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Center Business Association, the
15 festival helps fund such popular community projects as holiday
16 lighting and downtown decorations and banners; and
17 WHEREAS, Through the years, the organizers of the East Texas
18 What-A-Melon Festival have hosted an event that provides attendees
19 with a Texas-sized helping of fun and entertainment, and it is most
20 appropriate that the success of this festival and Shelby County's
21 importance as a major watermelon producer be duly recognized; now,
22 therefore, be it
23 RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas,
24 3rd Called Session, hereby designate the East Texas What-A-Melon
