road workmen on the Hallettsville ex
tension of the Aransas Pass road near

—San Antonio firemen will not cele-
brate July 4 h in San Antonio this year
in a body as tlie chief has decided to
leave New York in a few days to be ab-
sent for some weeks. In consequence a
great many of tlie firemen have decided

firemen will have a grand celebration
or at Boerne.
—Justice Barnes says in regard to the
complaint of unfair treatment made by
the Light yesterday that he never gave
any information of secret inquest- to
any of the newspaper reporters lie re-
quested the two newspaper men on the
jury not to publish tlie testimony and
does not know how the testimony got
into the papers. They agreed not to
publish it and if they violated their
agreement he was not a party to it.

The first annual convention of the
Lone Star Medical club opened last
night In Joske’s hall. The president
Dr. G J. Starnes occupying the chair
and a large number of colored citizens
were present.

To-night the Lune Star Literary asso-
ciation wLI entertain the club at the
Springs and Dr. Middleton will deliver
the annual address.
At 9p. m. the banquet will be given
at tbe U. B. F. hall on East Commerce
street.
The doctors in attendance have tbe ap-
pearance of being excellent gentlemen
and qualified doctors rueb as are a credit
to tbe race.

of an earnest self-sacrificing teacher. Deeply
impressed with a sense of our loss we desire
to offer the following tribute to our departed
friend and fellow-teacher:

Lord Salisbury’s eldest son. Lord Cran-
bourne was christened James that
being the name of the eldest sons of the
Cecil family for nearly three centuries.
The present marquis is a Robert but he
succeeded his elder brother who died
unmarried.
It is estimated that more than 100000
employes received a half holiday In
New York on Saturday by the opera-
tion of the new law. As the law does
not close dry goods stores Saturday af-
ternoon many fashionable ladies are
signing a pledge to onlj’ patronize those
stores which grant their employes a half
