Joseph Schumacher
Joe, Ida and Rita Schumacher moved to
Hereford in December, 1952 from Rhineland
Texas, Knox County.
Joe was born to Karl and Emma Honig
Schumacher in Knox County. Ida was born to
Charles F. and Mary Hoff Lindeman at
Windthorst, Texas, Archer County. Ida and
Joe were married on April 9, 1951 at Windhorst.
After moving here, Joe worked on a farm
northeast of Hereford for seven years. During
this time, Kathy, John, Wayne and Gary
were born. Rita and Kathy started school at
St. Anthony's. We had a chance to rent land
near Dimmitt, so we moved to Castro County
in 1959 and farmed there seven years. David,
Chris and Amy were born in Castro County
and the older children attended school there.
In 1966 the farm sold, so 1,000 acres were
rented north of Summerfield and we moved to
that area. We are still renting this land and
have bought a farm south of Hereford as well.
All the children helped and worked on the
farm; irrigating, hoeing cotton, roguing milo,
and driving the tractors and combine. We
raised our own hired hands, and they were
good. All the children attended Junior High
and Hereford High School. All were involved
in band or sports.
Rita and Kathy attended W.T.S.U. in
Canyon. Kathy graduated with a degree in
Physical Education. She married Dale Artho
of Wildorado and they have a son, Cory.
Kathy is a licensed Aerobic Instructor. Rita
transferred to Southwest Texas State University
in San Marcos. She graduated with a
degree in Business Administration and works
for the Eductional Services in Lubbock.
John joined the Marines for two years after
graduation from high school. He married
Janie Northcutt and they have a son, Jeremy.
John is a cattle feeder.
Wayne received a degree in Business Management
from Tarleton State College in Stephenville,
Texas. He works for Beral Corporation
in Dallas. He played football in high
school and college. He was named All American
while in college.
Gary became a pilot while in high school,
went to Texas Tech and then decided he
wanted to continue farming. He is renting
land north of Summerfield.
David was on the all District Basketball
team in high school as well as while in college
at Tarlton State. His major is Business and
Coaching.
Chris will major in Engineering at North
Texas State College, Denton. He was captain
of the football team, president of the Fellowship
of Christian Athletes, and also on the
National Honor Society for 3 years while inhigh school.
Amy is a drummer for the all-region band
in high school and has been on the Varsity
basketball team 3 years. She is also in theNational Honor Society. Amy will graduate
in 1982.
Joe and Ida are active in St. Anthony's
Parish; she in St. Anthony's Woman's Organization
and Joe in the Knights of Columbus.
Joe serves on the board of directors of the
Co-op Gin. Joe was named K.P.A.N. Father
of the Year in 1970. Ida was the Sports Fan of
the Year in 1981.

January 22, 1957, we came to Deaf Smith
County to our farm fourteen miles Northwest
of Hereford. We had bought the farm from
Mrs. Myrtle Cobb the year before.
At this time our family consisted of five
people. Oskar, born in Miles, Texas on June
22, 1918, myself (Lorine) born in Slaton,
Texas December 2, 1930, Dale, born in St.
Lawrence, Texas December 11, 1952, Roxann,
born in St. Lawrence, December 5, 1953,
and Connie, born in Slaton, March 29, 1955.
We were married at Saint Joseph's Catholic
Church in Slaton, March 27, 1951.Oskar Schwertner Family
After our marriage, we moved to St. Lawrence,
where we bought some land to farm.
Our first two children were born here. We
farmed about four years before moving to
Slaton. We moved in January of 1955 and in
March of that year our third child was born.
We lived in Slaton two years before moving to
Hereford. March 10, 1959, Eileen was born;
February 9, 1962, Christy was born, and
December 11, 1964, our last child, Loriann,
was born.
Oskar was given the "Purple Heart" for
being wounded in World War II. Now he and
Dale farm together. Dale and Roxann graduated
in May, 1972. Roxann graduated cumlaude
from West Texas State University
June, 1976 and passed the examination to
become a Certified Public Accountant in
1981. She is now a senior staff accountant at
William B. Allen accounting firm.

and a 1980 graduate of Texas State Technical

Investment Company (SIC) as a printer.
Christy is a Senior and Loriann is a Sophomore
at Hereford High School. I am
employed by Sue Ann sewing center. We have been members of Saint Anthony's
Church since our arrival to Deaf Smith County.
We have enjoyed living in Hereford
among some very nice and responsible people
who have helped us at times through thick
and thin. The people of this country have
always been there when we needed them to
stay with someone in our family when they
were sick or in the hospital.
We have seen this community come from a
farming community with plenty of fertile
land and plenty of water to a land with more
and more dryland and very little water and
less profit for the farmer. We have seen the
town of Hereford grow from a small town to
a town with 13,000 people. Overall, we have
enjoyed living in Deaf Smith County these
twenty-four years that we have been here and
hope to be able to stay in this wonderful
county.
