The Deaf Smith County Historical Society has been responsible for the preservation of history in this
area through the museum project. The collections of various artifacts and items have given us a visible
history of a part of that which has taken place during the last 100 years. In order to make a permanent
written record, the Project County History Committee was formed. This committee has had the responsibility
of researching and writing in narrative form some of the happenings and events unique only to
Deaf Smith County. Through this printed record the stories of the land and its people will live on for
future generations to enjoy. The Historical Society is proud to have been a part of this project.
R. Donald Hicks, President
To write a one book history that would include all areas of events and those who participated would be
impossible.
We have attempted to put facts and events as related to us by many contributors, which to the best of
our knowledge, are true and correct. The family stories are printed as written by the person whose name
is printed at the end.
We wish to express our gratitude to Bessie Patterson who allowed us to use material from her book
published in 1964, as a basis for some of our stories, and to those who published the Jubilee book edited
by Helen Rose in 1975. Many of the pioneer families in these two publications do not have relatives in the
county today and we are pleased to have been able to record their contributions to the county.
We are also grateful to each person who took time to write his family story, because without this interest
we could not have published this book; to those who volunteered their time in helping us do
research and write the special interest stories and community histories; and to those who have contributed
many hours on the contact committees for businesses and book sales.
Our appreciation to the County Judge and County Commissioners for the use of the upstairs part of
the E. B. Black house which is an adjunct to the museum. Being able to set up our offices and work area
in a place that was so conducive to the atmosphere of history, has been a joy and pleasure.
Without the help of some financial aid, it would have been impossible to attempt this project. Funds
for the operation of the office and other minor expenses were needed. The Jim Hill Estate has been most
generous to allow us those funds needed. All workers were volunteer with. the exception of one who was
needed to be available at all times when the office was open.
The writing and publishing of this book has been a labor of love for those of us who have been on the
working staff. We have not been able to include all that we had hoped for, but grateful we could preserve
a part of the history of Deaf Smith County.
It has been exciting to set in print a record for us and future generations some of the accomplishments
of the people who have done so much for our area.
On behalf of Project County History Committee, we thank the Deaf Smith County Historical Society
for allowing us the privilege to be a part of this very special publication.
My personal thanks to all who have worked so hard during the two years we have spent writing and
compiling the book. It has been a joy and pleasure to serve the community in this capacity.Troyce Stambaugh Hanna, Chairman
