INTRODUCTION
The 1921 edition of John F Worley Directory Co.'s Abi-
lene City Directory is herewith presented to its patrons with
confidence that it embodies all information that is vital con-
cerning the social, commercial, and industrial interests of
the city, and that it will fully meet the needs of patrons as a
work of reference.
The Directory is compiled in several essential depart-
ments as follows:
THE MISCELLANEOUS DEPARTMENT, pages 11 to
27, contains information relating to state, county and city
government, cemeteries, churches, courts, schools, hospitals,
labor organizations, libraries, post office, railroads, secret
organizations, societies, clubs, United States officials, etc.
THE STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE AND DIREC-
TORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS is embraced in pages 29 to
59.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY will be
found on pages 273 to 322. In this department the names of
all business men and concerns in Abilene are compiled first
by headings appropriate to the class of business or industry
pursued, then by names in alphabetical order.
ABILENE
An Important Jobbing Center in Central Texas
Abilene, the capital and seat of justice of Taylor county,
is a city of approximately 15,000 population, located on the
Texas & Pacific Railway, the Wichita Valley and the Abilene
and Southern Railways.
Although generally spoken of as a West Texas city Abi-
lene is, in fact, situated near the geographical center of the
state. It is 384 miles from El Paso on the west, 368 miles
from Texarkana on the east, 360 miles from Galveston on
the south and about the same distance from the New Mexico
boundary line on the northwest. It is the largest city on the
Texas & Pacific Railway between Fort Worth, 161 miles to
the east and El Paso, 384 miles to the west, or a total dis-
tance of over 550 miles.
The altitude of Abilene, measured at the passenger sta-
tion of the Texas & Pacific is 1,750 feet. The climate is mod-
rately dry, although there is an annual average rainfall of
25 inches, assuring an abundance of moisture for the culti-
vation of all kinds of field and garden crops which are ex-
tensively grown in the territory. Winters are usually mild
and the summers never excessively hot. The average maxi-
