Kay Granger, a former Fort Worth mayor, became
the first Republican woman elected to the U.S. House
from Texas when she succeeded retiring Democrat Pete
Geren in the 12th District. Democrat John Bryant's
unsuccessful race for Senate opened up his 5th District
for Republican Pete Sessions.
Other retiring Democrats and their successors were:
Jim Chapman, 1st District, succeeded by Max Sandlin,D-Marshall; Charles Wilson, 2nd District, succeeded by
Jim Turner, D-Crockett; Kika de la Garza, 15th District,
succeeded by Ruben Hinojosa, D-Mercedes; and Ron
Coleman, 16th District, succeeded by Silvestre Reyes,
D-El Paso.
Retiring Republican Jack Fields was succeeded in
the 8th District by Kevin Brady, R-The Woodlands. -
