ITie sensational repotts of Mexican outrages
on American citizens in Mexico which are
published in the Express as telephonic corre-
spondence from this place would be ridiculous
were they not calculated to distnrli the very
pleasant relations existing between the citizens
of both Republics on this frontier.
Msjor Monroe and his numerous sub-
contractors employ a large number of Mexican
laborer! who receive gocd pay and kind treat-
ment. There has been no trouble between
the Mexican work men and their American
employers on this road. Hut there Is unfor-
tunately for the Rood name of our cltlxent a
small number of Americans in Mexico mostly
refugees' from justice who after filling them-
selves up with mescal conduct themselves in
a disgraceful manner and are promptly run
Into the calabooie. An occurrence of this
nature Is heralded by the Ksprcss correspond-
ent as an outrage on Americans. This new
Express correspondent Is an object of derision
to our citizens and his mischievous letter to
the Exoress is the only outrage on Americans
we are aware of on this frontier. " M."

A Remarkable Valedictory. 1
This remarkable valedictory comes from (he 1
pen of an Arkansas editor: "We do not leave
this community with any regret. We are glad
to go. We have not received due patronage
from this tou n consequently we are pleased
to throw up the journalistic sponge. It is Ihe I
custom of editors to say that they part with 1
their contemporaries with regret. We do not. j
We are devilish clad to quit. We have been 1
branded as a thief and it has been proved
that we are a thief consequently we have no I
regrets at parting. Those who owe us are ex-
pected to settle at their earliest convenience. I
Those whom we owe must wait." 1
The High Position He Occupied
An English gentleman and his wife who
have been traveling in Sicily fell Into conver-
sation one day with the driver of the vehicle In
uhlch they were riding. " I was not always
as you see me" said the coachman sadly.
"I once occupied a much higher position."
The travelers pricked up their ears for a ro-
mantic story of nobility in distress. "Yes"
added the driver "I was once a brigand and
all the men of my family occupied Ihe same
honorable position but I became engaged to
a girl whom I loved to distraction and my
fiancee disliking the profession on account of
Its risks persusded me to throw it up so now
I am only a carriage driver."
Cowhiding a Dude.
. A di patch from Savannah Ca. September
19 says: "A cowhiding affair in which a
belwitching brunette moving in fashionable
society played a leading role caused a decided
sensation in this city to-night. The lady In
question had been annoyed by several notes
from a man supposed to be a commercial
traveler for a New York house and upon the
advice of a gentleman friend granted her un-
known correspondent the privilege of making
a call at her home. Not anticipating a trap
the straoger presented himself at night and
had hardly entered the parlor when he asked
the lady's company for a stroll. Accepting
the invitation she left the house but had not
not proceeded further than half a block when
the gentleman who had concocted the plot
passed her and slipped a heavy cowhide into
her hand. Without a wurd of warning she
suddenly commenced lathing her insultcr
across the face with the whip and before he
could realize the situation he was streaming
with blood and had both of his eyes nearly
closed. Ills attempted apology only drew
forth more blows and he finally took to his
heels. The lady then returned home before
her family were aware of what had been going
on. Had the chastised dude fallen into the
hands of the lady's brother he would in all
probability have received a dose of cold lead.
Efforts are being made to ferret out the Iden-
tity of the man and II successful further sen-
sational developments may ensue."
New York September 25. Twenty-seven

ished his investigation of the case. lie says:
"During the past month a great many thou-
sand dollars worth of goods' have been
smuccled here by women. I am now takine
the affidavits of peisons Interested showing
that dress makers from Baltimore Philadel-
