TOWN TALK
SAYS THERE'S A NEW ROAD TO THE
ROCK QUARRIES.
nut r..lt.li.t Stone-
lllch -Hotel Wall.
Mn.ky lludei
At I am at load of sauntering asClisilt.il.
Monday found me on a ttioll around tlic city
to see what was lo lie teen.
Houston street needs sidewalk improve-
incut and double as many lamps at now glim-
mer along it at night. Hut for stversl electric
lights put up by private tartlet the tlieet
would be a capital place lor highway robbery.
Ceitainty the city could put up extra lamps on
Houston and other streets. An electric light
from the top of Crockett block would Rive
more light than 50 lamps near the ground
and would not dazzle and hurt the eyes as it
does when it It placed down low about the
heighth of street tamps. Several cities larger
than San Antonb are effectually and bril-
liantly lighted by eight electric lights on
towers I So feet high and San Antonio might
follow a similar plan. Jutl for an experiment
the Council might try one from the top of
some three story house in the city.
Houston street It not overrun with saloons.
To n Talk has no objection to or prejudice
against a neat and genteel saloon where pure
liquor Is vended (there's the rub) ; but half
tipsy men will collect about the doors ol
saloons block up the sidewalks blurt out
profane and obscene langauage and stare
ladies who pass out of countenance lly the
by the colored waiters and guests of the
"Maverick" and the "Menger" hotels fre-
quently monopolize the sidewalks and greatly
Inconvenience passers by they tit In chairs
on the sidewalk. If the city authorities would
but half way discharge their duty they would
cause the police to prevent this blocking up of
the streets with chairs. In other cities the
police will not allow people to collect In
groups on the streets so at to impede a free
passage but compel them lo "pats on" and
they arc perfectly right to prevent persons
from monopolizing the public streets. Town
Talk submits that guests at a hotel have no
more legal right lo occupy the sidewalks with
chairs than any other citizens and he Is quite
that if 50 citizens were to take chairs with
them and sit down on the sidewalk tn front of
Joskes' or Wolfson's the police would not be
slow tn notifying them to "git up and git."
Town Talk picked up some items about the
attempt to remove the memorial stooe from
the grave of the heroic Milam In Milam square
that shed an electric light on tt ; this was that
the stone was neatly dressed anil
Imbedded In the ground at
east a foot and that the stone which Is
hauled from the quarries Is not dressed but is
in the rough and that Milam square Is not In
the line of travel pursued by wagons coming
from the quarries to the city but Is nearly
a'mile out of the way. If wagons from the
quanics to the city pass through the center of
Milam square It is I am told unknown to the
well posted so alio it their hauling drested
stone from the quarries. It is queer that a
stone thrown out from a wagon to lighten It
will sink a foot Into the ground In an upright
position. It It a queer thing; at any rate
Town Talk does not understand how a tomb
stone of dressed slone sunk In the ground
fully a foot deep in the center of Milam paik
could be supposed to be a piece of unpolished
stone dumped out of a wagon to lighten the
load.
I picked up an "on dit" that "M" in the
Express who took up the cudgels for the
teachers against a jocular remirk in the Light
was Mr. Julius Means of Police Gazette fame.
Andrew Jackson once said he had known a
man in Tennessee who grew rich simply by
attending to bis own business and a good
many apprehend Mr Means will "bite 01T
more tobacco than he can chaw."
Confound the dudes they smell like musk-
rats and the faintest scent of musk turns my
stomach upside down. Several of these crea-
tures have just passed by me and driven me
to seek my room. More anon.

To receive Bishop Ncraz to-night all of the
Catholic churches of the city have been mak-
ing suitable and elaborate preparations during
the past week. A telegram has been received
from the Bishop stating that he would anive
this evening at 3 o'clock. The cathedral has
been profusely ami elegantly decorated.
Streamers of creen and white spangled with
golden stars are strung from arch and pillar
while over the many churches are inscribed I
on white shields the motto: "Incrucetpes
mea." The dais of the Bishop to the le.t of
the sanctuary Is garlanded with flowers and
over the tabernacle are the words "Vivat
pastor bonus In aetcrnum" to be Illuminated
by gas jets. The Ilishon will certainly meet
with a princely welcome to-night. The pro-
gramme as arranged is to ring all the bells
of the Catholic churches and also those of
the college and convent two hours before the
arrival of the prelate. Tlx: members of these
churches will proceed to the cathedral on the
Mala plaza and from thence they will proceed
in carriages or on foot to the depot the
ladles meanwhile to remain at the cathedral.
The Bishop will then be escorted by a numer-
ous body hcide d I jthe Eighth Cavalry band
and proceed to the cathedral. Here he will

r choir and at Its close will give the Episcopal
benediction and then be escorted to Ms resi
dence on St. Mary's street.
Accompanying the Bishop from his I'uru-
pean tour are Kev. Father IYerTerkorn. of this
city Tarrillton of Fredericksburg and Car-
det of Victoria. Father rfefferkoro the pis-
tor of SL Joseph's church taL city will be
heartily welcomed back and at the conclusion
of tervicet at the cithedral his pailthonert
will escort him to his chutcb and tesidence.
Thtre certainly will be no dearth of congrat-
ulations extended to Bishop Nerai.

Thit morning about to o'clock a six horse
team attached to an empty countiy wagon ran
away on Tenth street near the Sunset depot.
It appears that the animals In the lead were
"bronco" and became suddenly unruly de-
priving the driver of any control over them
and so they dashed away at Iheir own sweet
wilt and had just crossed the railroad track
when an old gentleman named I lore) was
run Into the pole striking him square between
the eyes knocking him senseless as the
wheels of the wagon passed over hit legs.
The team happening to run against the fence
enclosing the Emigrants' home suddenly
came to a stand still.
Mr. Hazel at the'tiuie of the accident was
observed walking along cane In hann and
when he saw the team dashing furiously in
his direction he seemed to grow confused
and threw up hit hands despairingly. He
was taken into one of the rooms of the Emi-
grants' home and Dr. Terrell was summoned
to attend him. When seen by the reporter he
was unconscious and presented a sickening
spectacle. Hit condition is serious if not
fatal.

The watchful party of police in company
with Captain Jackson were completely taken
In by the story heard by the latter night befoie
list on-Main plaza. A man giving himself
out as a detective was the informer and it now
turns out he Is nothing but a vagrant and hit
story a conglomeration of lies.
Kicked by a Ilor.e.
Mr. McDavitt who returned home a few
days ago while out driving in the country
was severely kicked on the leg by a horse.
At first It teemed as though not much injury
was done though the pain was intense but
now his leg seems to be getting worse and he
will very probably be confined to his bed.
Ignorance of tli Ijiw.
Officer Doebler last night arrested a man
named Rodriguez out by the Sunset depot
for carrying a pistol. However the evidence
conclusively pointed to the man's Ignorance of
the laws and further he had no intention of
breaking the ordinance as he was on the eve
of departure for New Mexico. The case was
therefore dismissed.

It will be of Interest to know that Mr. Caetar

Yesterday Judfe Mason and Commissioner
Guerginwent out to Mr. Tripp's on the Me-
dina and inspected the proposed change in
the Rockport and Caitrovllle road. They
also inspected the Elm creek crossing on the
Benton City road and concluded a bridge
was not needed at the creek. Judge Mason
there found that the Edwards school had not
been opened this year and Invited the trus
tees in to discuss the matter.
Yesterday afternoon lie performed a mar
riage ceremony between G. Schutte and
Mary Burtch and thit morning he Inspected
the poor house where he found preparations
for gardening going on.
An Impudent Frenchman.
The coolness and audacity of some people
is simply astounding and the remarkably
straightforward way In which they depict those
not generally possessed traits is worthy of
note. Yesterday a frenchman went into Mr
Emerson's store wishing to pawn a vest. He
was refused money on the vest when he
walked down to the other end of the store re
maining there for some time and finally offered
the garment again but was denied. He left
the store but as he walked out the clerk no
ticed the garment fit him rather tightly. Upon
examination It was found that he had ex-
changed his old vest for a better one. An
officer was tent for and the Frenchman was
caught and landed in jail.
Tlioso IMfinionds of IlAvl.'.
So Mr. C. I.. Davis (Alvin Joslin) is
afraid to risk his precious diamonds on ex-
hibition here and has sent them to New
York for sale keeping. They were exhibited
here on his last annual pilgrimage and we
have yet to learn that any of them were ab-
stracted. Are they any aaler in New York
than in San Antonio? A showman who re-
quires a whole freight car to carry his Kohl-
noors and an engine tender to keep his big
watch in transit should not stop at New York
with such tempting prizes. He should run
them right Into the tower of London and hire
the whole British army to stand guard over
them while he it earning rations for them.
But perhaps they are In "soak" and conse
quently safer at "Mine Uncle's" than any
where elte.
