Deerwood on tbe Stand.
The Jury was empaneled andtho Intro
duction of testimony commenced yes
terday afternoon in the District court
tho case of Jen 1). Ilenson. The first
Itncss Introduced by the State was
Idword Schelrer a little boy who dc-
oscd that he had beard cries 'the even
ing before issuing from tho bushes whero
the child was afterward found dead. Ho
told his parents and saw tho body of tho
child next day Just whero bo had heard
tho cries.
William Holt and Sohelrcr tho
father of the first witness testified to
finding the body next morning; that It
as yet warm and had evidently not
been dead long.
Fanny Alexander the old negro woman
at whoio houso the girl and Ilenson
stayed was next examined. Much In
terest was shown In hearing her evi-
dence. She sn Id the child was born In
her houso whllo Ilenson had gone for
Mrs. Dr. Klngslcy who failed to come.
lien Shropshire had come to her on Jan-
unry 2 and engaged a room for his sister
who lie said would be confined in about
month. Tho child was born about 3
"clock Saturday morning and was a
healthy girl baby.wolgblng about eight
ornlno pounds. She washed It and
made some little garnierits for It out of a
sheet and table cloth. Miss Mat ilo told
her to take her red flannel petticoat and
mako clothes for It. Saw the baby fro'
quently during tho day and dressed It
gain about S o'clock. Missed the baby
afterwards but said nothing about It.
During the night Jeff Ilenson had gono
out and was gono about two hour;. On
cross examination sho stated that she
recognized the body by clothing. Did
not see Jeff Ilenson when he went out
at night; supposed It was ho bcoauso
she had seen nobody clso around the
house.- Other details were testified to
and Mr. I'rultz was noxt called. Ho
had been out hunting a horso on the
prairie and saw Schelrer and a boy
landing by a child's body. The body
was limber when he saw It. Waited
there until llader camo with a Coroner's
ury and then went to Fanny Alexan-
der's houso where Mollle Shopshlro and
Jelr Ilenson wero found. Tho room
they wero In was very dark. The girl
confessed to having been confined and
when asked where the body was Ilenson
spoke nnd said; "It is dead and
burled It." Ilenson would not say
where ho bad burled It and Under ar
rested him. Tho body was found about
si mile from tho negro woman's house
I red Under. Constable was next ex
amlned. Ilo said he had been called on
on January 12 to summon a Jury to hold
nn Inquest on the body of a baby found
near Dlgnowlty's pasture. Ills testi
mony was suDstaniiauy n corroDoratlon
or Prultz's except that he said Ilenson
was behind a door In the small room
where I'rultz said bo was beside the
Uoor-oncnlne.
This closed tha testimony on the part
of the prosecution and witnesses for tho
ueienso wero lnirot uceii. Mrs. nr.
Klngsloy was the llrst to testify for In
this behalf and her evidence was simply
that sometime about January 12 last she
bad been called upon about 12 o'clock at
night to go and see n woman who was
very sick. She was called upon by a
man. put uiu not see mm sulllolentlv to

in any way related to the girl but de-
fendant's counsel objected that any such
statement If made at all was made
