FIRE ON AVENUE C.
Mr. Sain Maverick's Stahles Burned 1 the
Cround
About U o'clock last evening n lire of
it serious character broke out nt the
corner of Avenue Cand Tenth street. It
occurred In the two-story lumber stablo
and laundry Ihe property of Mr. Sam
Mavcrlok all of which has been entirely
destroyed. The upper portion of the
building was Inhabited by Mr. Wood
his wife and four children. The family
aro In poor circumstances and It was
ow Ing to the generosity of Mr. Maverick
that they lived over his stable. Their al-
ready straitened condition has been ren-
dered worse by the disastrous efleots of
the late lire their furniture and wearing
apparel having been entirely consumed.
It wns nt first thought their llttlo stock
ofready cash f.00 had become Irretriev-
ably lost amidst the debris of the
smouldering timbers but by the exer-
tions of the polloe and Mr. Maverick the
purao contalnlngthe cash together with
a gold .chain were found Intact
The estimated loss of tbll unfortunate
family Is 5.100 nnd is perhaps of a more
serious cpnseuuence than that Of Mr.
Maverick which is $1000 he having na
Insurance on the property.
During the progress of the fire the
heat of the flames became so Intense as
to scorch the trees before the residence
or .Mr I.. D. Murphy opposite. The
houses adjacent arc also badly scorched
1 hut owing to the energies or the flru
brigndo Ihe flames were prevented from
spreading.

The Electric Alarm.
The Fire department ought to be pro-
vided with the electric Are alarm system
as asked for. Other cities In Texas that
have rcceutly added It to their depart-
ments are pleased with lis workings.
The cost la but n trifle compared with 1
the Increased facilities for saving prop-
erty. With this Improvement the Fire
department would also find other minor
Improvements necessary to Its success- I
ful workings and would be greatly.ln-
creased In eUIclency nnd promptness.
Too much cannot be done for the volun-
tcer fire department anywhere. I
