lejs and crystal streams; Tar beyond Is
the long continued procession or peaks
white with the everlasting snows with
living green on their sunny slopes. The
eye Is untrammelled In Its vision awe ril-

tng In the sunlight the snow crested
pines In obeisance bend submissively
lo the uiancloiis panorama before them.
Looking far down Into the dead silence
and tinlathomable abyss below the train
at a fearful speed seems like a snake
crawling leisurely along and the river
beside It as n slhcr thread winding Its
way through tho very oosom 01 tne
earth. Our expanded soul In vain grasps
for words to express our thoughts but
not a word escaped our Hps; we dared
not sperk while the soul knew that lan-
guage could not tell our appreciation:
all all was silence save the whispers of
nature and tho breathings ot heaven's
air. Karth and heaven are Joined where
earth ended heaven began uttering
softly as it were sweet rhapsodic from
the "nearness of heaven's throne." We
descend we leave It but not till the Im-
press of this marvel or the whole world.

Vance deceased which has been on trial
In the District court for three days past
before Special Judge vnlthall was given
to the Jury last evening. The case
presents many points or Interest not
only to those learned In legal lore but to
tho general reader also. James Vance
was well known to many of the citizens
of San Antonio especially to those who
have resided here for 13 or 20 years past.
He was one of the wealthiest citizens
and most cultivated and polished gen-
tlemen respected nnd beloved by all
who knew him. In ISC" after the ter-
rible struggle which had devastated the
country was over he returned to San
Antonio and attempted to re-establish
the business which be had suc-
cessfully rim before. Broken hearted
by the Iors qf- those near
and dear to hint nnd unsuccessful In
business lie becamo a olianged man and
evidences of n weakening mind became
apparent. Soon madness usurped rea-
son's throne and he became an Imbecile.
Quo species of hit madness was developed
In a mania for making wills of which he
wrote a host In each one making a
different disposition of lilt property. The
wonderful subtlety of the Human mind
was shown in uis case ior 110 reauzeu

of It to his friends. In 1800 Colonel
