has proven himself a most expert and
skillful man by the manner In which he
has finished the work. San Antonio
would be fortunate If he could be se-
cured for Street Commissioner. He
would be a valuable assistant to the
.City Engineer and It would hardly be
necessary to tend abroad again for a
man to get up a plan for a sewerage sys-

The last day of the week was charac-
terized by a general cleaning up of the
docket and there were a larger number

The amateur minstrel troupe com
posed of members of the San Antonio
Rifles made their first appearance last
evening at Turner hall. A fashionable
and crowded audience assembled to wit
ness and hear the entertainment. The

transpired that an effort was made at
the. Grand opera house on Wednesday
to assassinate Sitting Hull aa he was
leaving the theatre. While still In the
building one of two unknown men sud-
denly drew a pistol and without rais-
ing the hammer aimed It at the great
chief but his companion knocked Uta
weapon down before It could be dis-
charged lioth men followed the Indian
out but no further attempt on .their
lives was made. Bitting null is now
constantly guarded even In his hotel a
guard being placed at the door.
MiNNiurou September 5. General
Duller addressed 15000 people at the
Minneapolis fair grounds this evening
on the political oppression of Mats-
chusettsby the two great parties lie
made no reference to himself or his par-
ty but denounced the Republicans and
Democrats alike unsparingly.
In the evening the trades assembly
and citizens held a meeting and listen-
ed to Ilutler's address for two hours.
He reviewed the history of the two par-
ties and gave his scheme for a third par-

Gorman and Jonas and H. 1). Smolley
were In charge of the Democratic Na-
tional headquarters to-day. State Sana-
tor James Pierce said: "I have been
spending some time In Maine and I be-
lieve Reed will be beaten for Congress.
I was surprised to find so many Repub-
licans there against Maine. The Blaine
Republicans are however making des-
perate efforts for a large majority Gen-
eral Durbin Ward xif Ohio said: "We
have hopes of Ohio. We have carried It
In the last two October eleotlons and I
see no evidence of defection. We have
unfortunately our own Internal feud
and strifes In the State. They are -rather
personal and will not affect tbe
canvass but of course we will have dif-
ficulty In carrying the State. We never
have carried it In any Presidential oo
test for 30 years and we have not car-
ried It twice In succession for SO yeen
until the last two years. This fact gives
me hope that we will gain perniasreaf
control of the State."
