One More Honest Man.

When the conductor had passed

the Denver train It pulled out of
Crete yesterday afternoon he was called
back by a tired-looking man with n
faded terra cotta moustache.

The conductor looked and confessed
he did not.

A farmer who felt In his heart that
this was a cold world and that no one
cared for blm or his mechanically
slipped ft goose egg into his coat tall
pocket and betook himself to the village
and ofllce of the Gazette where ho pro-
duced the egg .and swore by the horn
spoon that It was laid by a pullet. The
astonished and delighted editor sent out
for a bed cord to measure the length
and diameter of tho egg presented the
farmer with a year's subscription and

The next Issue of the Gazette contained
a full and thrilling description of the
egg and the pullet and wound up by
saying that farmer Johnson was honest
upright enterprising and progressive
and that he has the loveliest family the

which bo tickled the farmer that ho car-
ried a grin until the weather wore tho
enamel off his front teeth and he had
no trouble In marrying off hlsdaughters
selling off his old hay and getting
elected as supervisor

A Lively Youns Panther.
On Friday morning an Indian killed
a large cougar near l'olnt Defiance. He
found the animal lying on a sandbar In
wait for deer and at the first shot It
Jumped a distance of 13 steps about 40
feet. He shot It four times before he
killed It. He describes the animal as
being about two tcet high and six or
seven leet from me tip or its nose to the
end of Its tall and says It was not full
