Died from Consumption.
Mrs. Ilyrne of St. l.ouls died jester- j
day afternoon nt -I o'clock at Clark's
boarding-house on St. Mary's street.
This lady was about 2J years of age nnd
for the iinst three months has been stay
ing in san Antonio to try anu snake on
the clutches of consumption. Although
her relatives have been telegraphed to
as to the deposition of the body no an-
swer has yet been received and Ills
miner n curious inct inai mo ueceaseu
lady never mentioned any of them be-
fore death nor asked for any message
to be conveyed to them.
A Series ot Troubles.
Misfortunes never come singly nnd It
Is aptly Illustrated In the case of Mr.
Herman Helllgmann. Ills wife has
been attacked with typhoid malaria of
mi acute type and Is barely on the verge
of convalescence when his eldest daugh-
ter. Rosa aged live years Is attacked
with scarlet lever (in Mi turd ay his lit-
tle daughter Adele nged three years
Injured her eye by piercing It with scis-
sors. This nculdent cnused a cataract
to form which will be operated on at 4
o'clock tins evening by ir. ryner.
Horn Chair Exhibit.
The horn chair exhibit of Mr. V.
Frledrlch which will be sent to New Or-
leans Is now on exhibition In the rear of
No. 3.1 Commerce street and attracted
many visitors to-day. It consists of a
complete parlor set of 12 pieces all made
of bom and horn veneering except the
rockers of the rocking chair which are
of Texas black walnut. Tbe entire set
Is beautifully upholstered In leopard

Captain Shardeln testified that com-
plaint had been tnaclo at police head-
quarters of tramps sleeping In box cars
al the Sunset depot and this morning at
U o'clock he and somoolllcers went out to
tho depot and found these three In n box
car asleep. Ono door of the car was
sealed but the seal on the other door
was broken and was open.
Thomas I.arkln n hardened-looking
old vagrant was next called. When he
answered to roll call he told a long and
rambling story about being on his way
to work on some government buildings
now being erected here when he was
arrested. City Attorney Newton In-
formed him that no government work
was being erected here at present and
then teslltled that I.arkln visited his
house begging of his wife for something
to eat Air. Newton happened to bo at
home nnd forthwith brought him down
to police headquarters and gave him in
charge. Fined $10 or 30 days.

An Ineffective Protest.
Amtjng the sample ballots returned to
tho County Clerk's olllce by the Inspec-
tors nnd canvassed by the Hoard of Su-
pervisors yesterday was ono from the
Eleventh ward of Ilullido hearing this

He was bound to vote to suit himself
nnd so he threw away his vote entirely;
but his protest against the clumsy and
outgrown methods by which we still
elect our Presidents nnd Vice Presidents
