A WORD OF WARNING.
j The ncccnl Contest ? Between
Cole ana Moggioll.
Fiom I l.o I'lilliid. li Ida p r I ir l.lle.
After carefully rending u great deal
that has been published concerning the
alleged inntch oMOOO points for $500 be-
tween Harry Cole and Frank Mntrgloli
played at Ban Antonio Texas on the
evenings oT October 21 25 and 20 can-
dor must compel us to state that we
have seen nothing in the public prints
to convince us that the game was an
honest one while we have seen much to
convince us that If the contest was not
a deliberate hippodrome It will require
more convincing proofs than we have
yet seen to make us alter our opinion.
For so fur as we can Judge from reports
published In the I.ii.iit of Ban Antonio
where the contest took place the game
most unmistakably bears lbs stamp of
crookedness on Its very face.
11 Is on the other hand notwithstand-
ing the charges made dltllcult to think
that .Maggloli should be engaged In n con-
test which Is surrounded with such
suspicion. This player. If we aro not
mistaken bears an excellent reputation
not only as an expert but also as a man
of honor. We nt lcasthave no recollec-
tion of him before the contest In ques-
tion as ever having been engaged In
any game where there was the slightest
suspicion. That Maggloli owes It to
himself not less than to his business to
explain the cause cf the charges made
no one will question; otherwise we fear
that this unfortunate contest will have
cast such an odor on his professional
record as to make hlin regret being In
any way connected with so lamentable
an ntlnir.
Of Harry Colo we know but little. If
wo nre not mistaken he llrst came
prominently before the public as a
player at Tammany hall New York In
the spring of lbsl. Ills record theie
was simply remarkable for what he tried
lo accompiisit as an expert but did not
succeed. Ills reputation however was
clean and no one censured him for not
helnir crent inasterortlieVn ie wbll
lilch
doubtful
not some lire where there has been so
very much smoke.
T he public after all is not so much at
fault In these matters as the players If
a contest Is honestly gotten up
thero Is but one way to convince
the public or that fact and that is
ror the players to depo.lt the money
In the hands or stakeholders whose in-
tegrity can not and will not be ques-
tioned. Tho fact that the gnnie was
played In Ban Antonio Texas Is no
reason why Maggloli and Cole should
not have deported the money with
men who are generally recognized as be-
ing the proper and safe parties to ap-
point as stakeholder. There are nt lemt
fifty protesslonnls In various parts efthe
l country who nre known personallror
I professionally to botlj Cole and Maggloli
the selection as stakeholder or any one
of whom would have convinced llm nub.
llo that the contest was n bonn tide one
for the simple reason that the room-
keepers manufacturers or imr.lnimU
i be'nK ne Parties wo refer to could
not and would not permit their names
luueuaeuin connection Willi any con-
test not played on llsuierlts.
There are also very many honorable
sporting Journals In the country at the
present day whose editor would not on-
ly have acted as stakeholder for Messrs.
Lole and Maggloli bat they would have
been glad no doubt to use their influ-
ence In making such a contest a success
lo appoint such parlies as we have re-
ferred to as stakeholders however It
would have been necessary to put up the
cold cash before the game took place.

The Fruits or Victory.
There Is a natural desire on the part
orour Democratlo friends .to enjoy the
Fuustnntlal fruits or their party's vic-
tory it Is also natural for each aspir-
ant; to busy himself to get ahead or
every other aspirant. So Tar as West
Virginia Is concerned the principal
placei for which there Is most conten-
tion are not vacant. Yet Republicans
are neked and some of them consent to
sign applications to be presented to
President Cleveland ns Boon as he takes
Ids seat or sooner for aught we know.
Assuming that a place Is to e tilled by
n Democrat Republicans may have their
choices as between Democrats. Ilut a
better assumption is that Republicans
who were appointed for n certain term
will serve out their terms.
ror example the term or the Wheel-
ing Postmaster has over two years to
run. To endorse an application forthls
place may be construed ns at least an
acquiescence In his removal. It may
not be Intended to use the endorsement
ln that way but at this time we cannot
foresee what shape events mny take
three or four months hence. The better
plan Is to let our Democratlo friends
light it out among themselves.
If capable and elllclent Republicans
nre set upon by the Democratic admin-
istration before their term has expired
Republicans will raise their voices In
protest and the Republican who has
barred hlmseir from Joining ln the pro-
test will feel like Robluson Crusoe
lonely and uncomfortable. "With malice
toward none" let the Republicans Btand
olTand watch the performance. I Wheel-
