SHOT IN THE BACK BY A FE
MALE.
Not Fatally Wounded-Tho Work
of tho English Govern-
ment Ho Says.
Ji'kw YoiiK.February 2. At 3:1 i o'clock
this evening O'Donovnn Itoasa the Irish
dynamiter so-called was shot by n j
woman on Chambers street ncarUrond-
wny. At that hour the streets were lull
of people homeward bound making
their way toward llrooklyn bridge and
uptown. Excitement over Hie snooting
although Iho man was recognized by
cry few was Intense. I ho first shot
fired took effect In Itossa's body and ha
fell lo the sidewalk. The woman con-
tinued shooting until sbo emptied her
live-chambered revolver. Only the first
shot took effect. City Mnrslinl James
MoAuley wui present and breaking
through the crowd that bad collected
seized the woman who still had tho
moklng pistol In her hand and told her
she was under arrest. The woman of
fered no remonstrance but allowed her-
self to bo taken through tho mass of citi-
zens nnd to tho city ball station house.
Georgo W. Harlow n merchant of 110
Itead street and l'etcr Y. Kvcrclt. for-
merly n reporter who witnessed the
shooting accompanied tho captor and
aptlve to tho station saytngthey would
be witnesses. When tho woman had
ceased firing Iiossa rose to his feet and
tried to nnd his way back to his olllco on
Chambers street which he had just left.
lie said "1 am shot." trying
0 place his hand on his back under Iho
shoulder blade. After a few steps some-
body In the crowd suggested that he
should go to the Chambers street hos
pital. A couple of men lent their arms
and O'Donovnn did us suggested nnd
directed his steps toward the hospital.
He walked all the way there a distance
of nearly n quarter of a mile. lie bled
considerably on the way. Onco In the
hospital hu was undressed and examined
by Dr. Dennison. It was found that the
bullet bad entered the back directly be-
low the left shoulder blade. The doctor
pronounced the wound not dangerous
and began to probe for the hall. A great
crowd had followed the wounded man
down Chambers street blocking tho
road In front of tho hospital alter the
door was locked behind O'Donovnn and
his escort. In the meanwhile the woman
had been taken to tho station house
with another crowd following her. She
was placed beforo tho Sergeant's (leek.
She was good-looking dressed neatly In
plain black clothing nnd wore eye-
glasses. She looked like n school teach-
er with an Intellectual face. Her man-
ner was composed and she answered
some of the nutations put to her prompt-
ly nnd without embarrassment. To
others she simply shook her head and
suld : "I shall only nrswer questions I
know you have a right to ask." McAu-
ley handed the pistol of small calibre to
the Sergeant and said he had seen the
t snoot a man on Uliniu tiers street
lunteer witnesses assented to the
stated facts of the shooting. She was
asked: "Do you know the man you
shot?" "Yes" replied she; "certainly"
with an English decent "I shot O'Don-
ovnn Itossa."
further questioning bv the Scrceant
elicited that the prisoner's name was
Vseult Dudley aged 23; that she was n
nurse nnd marrleii and that sho lived at
No. 00 Clinton 1'luce. She was asked
tho questions why she shot htm how
long she had been In America and oth-
ers to n hleh she made no answer. After
her pedigree had been taken she was es-
corted to the rear room and the crowd
slowly dispersed. As there nro no nc-
commouations ior prisoners In tlie City
Hall station Mrs. Dudley was removed
to Oak street station nt 7:15 p. m. nnd
there placed In the cell. Her entire de-
meanor was that ofn rational person
nnd n cool-beaded one at tbat.
Itossa had been placed on a cot In the
same ward with Captain 1'lielan who
was stabbed by Itlchard Short In O'Don-
ovan's olllce over three weeks nco.
O'Donovnn was aithln eight beds of

Dr. Klrby showed that the bullet had
penetrated the back about half an Inch
above the left shoulder blade. The ball
ranged upward and Inward toward tho
spinal vertebnu. The bullet Is evidently
lodged In the muscles of the back and

tered little. It was at ono time tenred
that the bullet had penetrated the lung
but as the wounded man has exnecto-
rntcd no blood this was nlterwards pro-

been signs of paralysis but none ap-
peared. The doctor probed unsuccess-
luliy lor me bullet. They concluded no
large blood vessel had been 'Injured
and as O'Donovnn Is a fleshy muscular
mr.n of robust constitution there was
no dancer to bo annrebended. The doc
tor will probe again for the bullet to-
morrow morning Some time alter his
admission to the hospital Itossa was
moved to another ward. Hero he said
bo thought his condition was serious
enough to warrant his making an unto
iiioiiem "uueiiieiii ami me coroner was
sent for. When that olllclal arrived
O'Donovnn made the following state-
ment: "On Saturday January 31 about 3 p.

we go to somo place. Wn walked down
Chambers street toward llroadway and
we had gone a short dlttance toward
llroadway when the woman stepped
bark and fired two or three shots at me.
Ono of the balls entered my back.
Soon after making this statement.
O'Donovnn Itossa rested more easily and
said he was hopeful of pulling through
nil right. Captain I'heian who Is (till
guarded by policemen when Informed
of the particulars of the shooting smiled
grimly but refused to say anything on
the subject.
