Foreign Element In Chicago.
Ciucaqo December 3. The Chicago
saloon keepers are exercised over the
crusade against what they consider
their rights In the matter of Sun
day selling. They claim the enforcing
of a strict law compelling the closing
of saloons on the Sabbath da)' would be
a ere at Intustlce to the general popula
tion of the city. They have prepared
statistics from the school census of last
year to support their arguments that
the Sunday law should not be enforced
in this city. Their table shows there
were in 188-1 174000 people In Chicago
Having tnguin anu American cnarac
terlstlcs. and presumably In favor of th
Sunday observance. On the other hand
there were 114000 Irish 210000 Her-
mans. -13.000 Scandinavians. 28.000 llolie-
mlans 21000 Poles 30000 French. 4000
Italians 80O0 Africans 24000 Swedes
18.000 Norwegians and 0000 Danes and
other nationalities making a total or
nearly 500000 foreigners. It Is claimed
that a Inrire ma or tv or these foreign

Here are two specimens copied from
the Indon Freethinker of November 10;
The ltev. J. W Hooper has seized a
bed five chairs and two tables from tho
house of a poor worklngman named
Worley who lives nt l.ow Fell near
Oateahead. He oils this tithes. Men
of rominon sense will rail It sanclllled
robbery. Tho reverend robber evidently
approves of Christ's saying "Ulve to
him that asketh;" and ho thinks It
highly tin-Christian that any of his Hock
should refuse the tithes lie asks ol them
so as pastor and master he compels his
lambs to carry out Christ's Injunction.
When lie takes tbelr chairs they ought
to give him their tables also and he as
a good Christian sees t tint they do It.
The ltev. W. Stewart Itoss form-
erly Hector of Christ Chinch llel-
fast was clmrgid before the mag-
istrates of Plymouth with wound-
ing John Toier and William Way.
The Itevercnd delinquent had eloped
last March with the wife of Mr. Charles
Fox a teacher In the Christ Church
Sunday School. After a long interval it
was discovered that the man of God was
preaching the gospel at Plymouth and
Mr. Fox determined to follow him there
and expose Mm. Mr. Fox found 111 in
conducting n religious service In the
Young Men's Christian Association and
rushing at hint struck him with his
walking-stick and denounced him as
having run away with his wile.
The Reverend gentleman escaped Into
the street nnd was pursued by a rapidly
increasing crowd. Presently he pulled
out a pen knife and stabbing nt his per-
suers wounded Mr. Toerln thohnndsc-
verrly and Mr. Way liol.tly. Mr. llnss
Indignantly denied the oliarge or stab-
bing but Admits having eloped with
Mrs. Fox alleging moreover that he
did this Willi the full knowledge or her
hu'band. What should we do without
these holy ministers to teach us morals
nnd show us the ways or piety nnd
peace?
