Rusk Eagles Basketball
Rusk's Lady Eagles face toughest game
of season Friday against Crockett Bulldogs
I Game will be
carried live on radio
Rusk's Lady Eagles are prepared
for their toughest game of the sea-
son Friday night when the Lady
Bulldogs of Crockett visit them.
Crockett is one of the top five 3A
girls team in Texas, according to a
number of polls.
Rusk has compiled a fine 4-1
record. Their only loss was to last
year's state champion, Hudson.
Coach Larence Gardner's Lady
Birds defeated Hudson Dec. 4 by a
score of 48-38. However they lost
the district opener to the'Hudson
girls by the score of 54-52.
They soundly defeated the Lady
Roughriders of Center 69-34 De-
cember 20. Huntington was the
next team to meet the Lady Birds
Dec. 30. Rusk could do no wrong,
and walked away with a convinc-
ing 73-35 victory.
The Diboll Lady Jacks were the
fourth district opponent to meet
the Lady Eagles. This game was
all Rusk, too. Rusk beat this team
77-40.
Central became the fifth district
opponent Friday, Jan. 7. The Lady
Birds finished the night with an
85-45 win.
Coach Gardner's Flock went to
Trinity Tuesday night, but results
were not available at presstime.
Rusk vs. Crockett
The Rusk-Crockett girls game
will be aired live by radio stations
KTLU-AM and CD 97.7 FM,
KWRW Friday, Jan. 14.. Action is
expected to start at 6:30 p.m. Sam
Florian and Ken Peloquin will pro-
vide the play-by-play coverage.
Boys have tough start
Rusk's Fighting Eagles have had
a tough start in District 21-3A bas-
ketball competition to date.
Coach Marks Lanham's Birds
traveled to Huntington Dec. 30 and
lost the season opener 26-24.
The Eagles entertained Diboll's
Lumberjacks here Friday, Jan. 4,
and suffered 102-63 loss. The Birds'
defense vanished as the game pro-
gressed. Their offense was good
enough to win most games.
Rusk traveled to Central Friday,
Jan. 7 and suffered another loss.
This time the score was Central 52
and Rusk 43.
The Rusk-Trinity game played
there came in too late for reporting
this week.
Crockett's potent Bulldogs will
come to Rusk Friday, Jan. 14 for
important district games that will
include both boys and girls.
Action is slated to get underway
at 5 p.m. that will include both JV
and Varsity games for both girls
and boys.

Lady Eagles plan to put heat on Red Devils

with an 85-45 win. The Lady Eagles' district record Is 4-1.

The Junior High Lady Eagles
will host the Huntington Lady Redj
Devils on Thursday, Jan. 13 start-
ing at 5 p.m. The seventh grade
"B" team will open with the 7A
team following. The eighth grade
"B" team will then play followed
by the 8A team.
Palestine Tournament
The Lady Eagles made their
"annual trip to the Palestine Tour-
nament Jan 7 to face some strong
area teams. The Ladies opened
against Elkhart. The Lady Eagles
were primed and ready for the
Lady Elks and earned the win with
a score of 44-12. The first quarter
found the strong Rusk team ahead
with a score of 20-2. Thehalflime
score was 28-6. Beginning in the
second quarter the Lady Eagles
pulled back into quarter court de-
fense and found all nine players
contributing to the team effort.
The third quarter ended 36-10 and
the final score was 44-12. K.Ross
toss in 18; A. Griffin added 14; T.
Gresham contributed 4 and; A.
Villegas, A. Lanham, C. McCloskey
and S. Martin each added 2. The
Ladies are now 9-0 for the season.
The Lady Eagles qualified for
the semifinal round against
Fairfield. Fairfield was a strong
team, but the Lady Eagles never
reached the usual level of play
during the contest. K. Ross scored
4 points and K. Massingill added 2
points for the Lady Eagles. Final
score was 6-42, resulting in the
only Iobb of the season for the Rusk
Ladies.
The game for third place placed
the Lady Eagles against the home
team. The Lady Eagles fresh off
the loss to Fairfield came out with
a determination not to lose. The
strong Eagle press found the score
23-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The Ladies backed out of their full
court press and the score increased
to33-5byhalftime. K.RossandA.
Griflin sat the third quarter out
while the score increased 35-18.
At the final buzzer the Rusk La-
dies had won the third place game
with a score of44-20. A. Griffin led
all scorers with 17 points, five of
those being free shots. K. Ross
contributed 10 points in the first
quarter, followed by five in the
fourth including one three point
basket. The Lady Eagles currently
stand at 10-1 for the season and
are undefeated leaders of their dis-
trict.
Lady Eagles vs. Diboll
The Lady Eagles traveled to
Diboll Jan 6 for district play. The
"A" team did not play up to their
usual level but won with a score of
25-16. The Ladies led at the end of
the first quarter 8-2. Halftime
found the score 17-4. The third
quarter found the Lady Eagles in
the lead by 21-8. The final score
was 25-16. K. Ross led all scorers
with 10 points; A. Griffin added 5;
and A. Villegas, K. Massingill, A.
Lanham and S. Martin each added
2 points. The season record stands
at 8-0 and 4-0 in district play.
The "B" team faced a more deter-
mined Diboll team and lost with a
score of3-15. T. McAdams was the
only scorer for Rusk.
Lady Eagles vs. Crockett
The Rusk Lady Eagles enter-
tained the Crockett Lady Dogs Dec.
16 in district play in Rusk with a
fine showing of Lady Eagle bas-
ketball. Crockett was the only
team that outscored the Lady
Eagles during district play of their
seventh grade season. Rusk en-
tered the contest with a record of
6-0 for the season and 2-0 for dis-
1 trict play. The Lady Eugles came
out strong scoring on the opening
tip of the game and ended the first
quarter with a score of lf>-4. Rusk
continued controlling the game and
finished the half with a score of 23-
9. The third quarter ended with a
score of 33-14. All players found
time to contribute to the 37-17
win. A. Griflin led all scorers with
14, followed by K. Ross with 11
and T. Gresham and S. Martin
each with 5 points. The record in-
creased to 7-0 and 3-0 in district
play.
