Nacogdoches, Texas, May 17.—
tber • an unusual occurrence
took place in the Baptist church
last Sunday night. After the | - -j-p

be an honeBt man and when he be-
came convinced that he oould no

A Showman's Trick.
CirniKl «liirv'H Report.
It was his quick wit and shrewd-
'ness that made tbe late Mr. Bar-
|vtaum what he was; he was always
equal to an occasion. This clever
nees was often put to the test, and
stood it. His show at New York
was bo well filed one night that
crowds were waiting outside, for
whom no room oould be found.
Being a true showman it went to
Barnum's heart to decline any
money; but to get more people in-
to his place he must first induce
someto leave. He already had
posted over different compart-
ments of the show such announce*
ments as "lions.'' "tigers," "ne-
grees." ctc. With a sudden in-
epiration he prepared another large
poster, and stuck it on a back
door oi tbe building. This poettr
was tbe word "egress." The
crowd streamed towards this door
to see the supposed new beast,
and found themselves in the
street. Quick as thought Barnum
was pocketing his dollars from a
■warm of new errivals.

and you will, I think, agree with me il you will only make a com-
parison of goods of same quality. Now really don't you
always feel better satisfied when you buy your goods of a store
that has but one cash price to everybody, and a store that has the
reputation of keeping only good goods and at low prices?
Below I name a few prices, as I have not the space to name

On June 1 tho Gull, Colorado
and Hanta Fe will make an exper-

rapid settling of the coast country
contiguous to Galveston. The
company will on that date inaug-
urate commutation tales between
Galveston and the following sta-
tions: Hitchcock, Alta Loma, Ar-

The plan will be similar to that
used by all roads running out of

"I have had this idea in view
for the past two years," said Gen-
eral I'aaaenger Agent W. 8. Keen-
an, when approached about the
matter by a representative of The
Newe. "We do not expect it to
pay, at least not for some time,
but we inaugurate tho system with
the idea of building up the sta-
tions along the line between Gal
veston and Alvin. Quite a num-
ber of people now live cn the
mainland and do business in Gal-
veston, coming in in the morning
with the low commutation rates
we expect to put on we anticipate
that many more people will be in-
duced to build suburban homes on
the mainland.
"The advantage of a suburban
home is so well known that it is
unnecessary for me to dwell upon
that point. I will take Hitchcock,
for instance. The Bingle trip tick-
et costs 45 conta. A round trip
ticket is Bold any day in the week
for SO cents, on Saturdays for HO
cents and on Sundays at the rate
of one fare, 45 cents. We will
give a ten ride individual ticket
for $3.70, a twenty-five ride family
ticket, good for any member of the
family, for $7 35, and a oixty-ride
individual ticket for J7.95. The
aame ratio will be observed from
Alta Loma, Arcadia, Algoa and
Alvin.
"We do not expect to put on
extra train service, as we now
have two local trains coming down
in the morning and two iu ihn af-
ternoon, arriving here at 9.05 a.
m., 10,50 a.m., 3.35 p. m., and
9.20 p. m., while five local trains
leave Galveston daily at 0,45 a.
m., 7 a. m., 1.40 p. m., 5.45 p.
m., and 7.30 p. m."
Mr Keenan was quite enthusias-
tic over the plan and believes it
will redound to the advantage

To Hon. Ed. U. Sinks, Judge of
the 121st Judicial District:
We, your grand jury, having
finished our work, bag leave to
make this, oar final report, and bs
ditcbarged for the tsrm.
We have faithfully and diligent-
ly inquired into all matter*, both
felonies and misdemeanors, that
have been brought to ouv atten
tion, and have returned into oonrt
such violaticns of the oriminal
laws as we have been oonvinced
by the testimony of witnesses
brought befors us that such vio-
lations have been done.
We have had before us quite a
number of witnesses and have in*
vestigated quite a number ol cases
in which we have returned no-
bills, because the witnesaes eith? r
would not testify to the faots in.
the case, or knew nothing about
the laots in the case under inves-
tigation.
It having come to the grand jnry
by rnmors that the local option
law in the oity of Caldwell was be-
ing violated, we have investigated
said rumora as thoroughly as pos-
sible and have been unable to fiad
any violation of ssid law.
We havs investigated and oom-
pared the offioers report as mad
to (hs grand jury and find that
some few officers have failed to
make their report, and ofthsnnm-
bbr who have reported, we find a
few mistakes and inaccuracies, and
some of the reports are incom-
plete, not ooverlng the period sa
required by law, end would sug-
gest that tbe commissioners oourt
be more diligent and careful in
ohecking up and comparing ssid
reports.
It has been reported to us that
for the first 4 miles of tho publio
road leading from Caldwell to
Tunis is without an overseer, snd
would respectfully soggest that
said commissioners court investi-
gate and appoint an overseer if
said road is without one.
We are also informed and find
it to be a faot that the first 4 miles
of the Independence and Caldwell
public road is almost impassible
and would suggest that the proper
officers see that a -id road is pot
in a passible condition.
We find the privy in the oourt-
house yard is in a bad sanitary
condition, and would respectfully
buggett to the proper officers to
look after the condition of said
privy.
We have examined the jail and
find the same in a gocd, clean
condition, and the prisoners well
pleased with the .treatment they
ard ieceiving.
We have examined the tax col-
lector's occupation tax book and
find all occupation tax fully paid
up.
We would here thank the dis-
trict and county attorney for the
assistance and advice that tliey
have rendered us during the ees-
sion of the grand jury.
Having finished our duties we
would respectfully ask to be dis-
charged.

Foreman of tbe Grand Jury.
