of Home of tlic casen.
A reporter visited Walter
lirown in jail yesterday but could
elicit nothing from him further
than a claim that he wuk entirely
innocent and said he knew noth-
ing about anybody else stealing
Ihe things charged to him. It
was rumored on the streets that
other had been implicated by
him, but if ho no one could be
found who would acknowledge
having ever heard it.

ng to * standstill, and the guards
were yelling "Harlem — Harlem!
llarlem train."
With characteristic carefulness,
the absent-minded man tucked the
ticket away in his change poeket and
dropped the nickel into the chopping
box. He was graaped end hauled
back by tho chopper num.
"Put a ticket in there/* said the
man.
"1 did," said the weol-gathercr in
wrath.
"You didn't," retorted the man.
"You put in a niekle. See it?" lie
pointed through the glass side of the
box.
The passenger looked foolish, and
readied his hand into the box to get
the coin. Tho chopper man caught
his wriot.
"Keep your hand out of there,"
said he, "and put a ticket in."
"Do I got iny nickel, then?"asked
the victim.
"You put that ticket in!"
The wool-gatherer, a weak, pusil-
lanimous thing, fished out tho ticket
and dropped it in.
"Sow, what do I do?" said he.
"You go to the ticket office and tell
the man thcro about it."
Tho railroad employe accompanied
him to the ticket window.
"This man," said ho, pointing a
finger of scorn and derision at tho
ahsent-m:nded one, "dropped a
nickel in tho box and he wants it
back."
"Whnt'n blazes d'you do that for?"
demanded the ticket seller, angrily.
It wa late at night, tvhen there is
time for badinage of this sort. Tho
worm l ogan to turn.
"Jn t to soo what low-down thiev-
ing trick you would put up on me,"
ho taid, and glared.
The ticket seller filled ont a blank
and ftticntly pushed it through the
pigeonhole. This is how it read:

GALVANIZING WIRE.
Mew Process Does Away with Necessity
of Unwinding Coila.
At a recent meeting of tho Frank-
lin institute of l'hiiadelplua a paper
was read by George C. lieese describ-
ing a new process of galvanizing wire.
Knormous quantities of steel and iron
wire arc required to bo "galvanized"
or plated with zinc, and the long-ee-
tablishod process has been to unwind
the wire from one coil and wind it
upon another, pawing it in the mean-
time through baths or other means of
chemically cleaning the wire, then
through a long trough coutai*"'ng a
large quantity of melted zinc kept
constantly hot, and between wipers of
nslwwtos rir other materi... Tho proc-
ess has always been a slow, tedious
and expensive one. By the new proc-
ess the wiro is coated without the
necessity of unwinding the coils. Tho
coils or bundles of wire aro first;
cleansed by acid. The whole bundle
is then dipped into the hath of melt-
ed spelter, and when it has received a
thorough coatin

Wúa told the writer. It w ill be rt mciu-

llunmncl, the actor, that night slept
in the «ame room w here the c0r] e lay.
Sudtletily he was awakened by some
one exclaiming: "I'harlev, Charley!"
;;:id Mr. Huuuni.d had u s; nwition Uh
thoi!i,'.i he wshak n. lleun.-wcrcd:
"Vt -. )cs," and upon opening his
eyes was not a little surprised by see-
ing the d< nd man standing in front of
him. Mr. Hummel says the man con-
tinned as follows: "Charley, you
know* where I live. Telegraph my
folks. Don't you remember, at the
corner of and streets, Heav-
er Kn!l<, Pa. Your girl lives right
next door."
Mr. Rumniel «ays that he had the
Minn apparition once more that night
ami twice the following night. At
the suggestion of a (Jem City reporter
he wrote to the young lady in Heaver
Kails, Pa. The other day "he received
nn answer. The letter stated that the
Decks had lived there, but moved
away the latter part of October, just
about the tipio of the accident, but «lio
ating it is quickly
dropped into the basket of a centrif-
ugal machine. For «mall or light
coils the machino may bo already in
motion, while for heavierwireitmust
he started after the wiro is put in.
The surplus coating is almost instant-
ly thrown ofT from the wire and an ex-
cessive speed is not required. Tho
machine is stopped, and the bundle
of wire is removed as quickly as pos-
sible and is jarred upon a block to pre-
vent the wiro from sr! lering together.
Barbed wire has bei>n succ1 vsfully
treated by the new ¡>r«>oesí nfter it luis
been twisted into shape and formed
into bundles. When wiro is galvan-
ized before being b.rited and twisted
much of the coating • racks and peels
off and the points quu klyrust. Treat-
ed by the new piv ss, the. wiro is
more durable and retains its efficiency
much longer. Win cloth finer than
eight meshes to the inch cannot bo
Ígalvanized by the «•!< 1 method, while
>y tho new proccss cloth of any fine-
ness may bo coated, if the speed of
rotation is increase! according to
the fineness. Sampl s were shown of
13\i:> flv wire lit iveeh, believed to
be the first of tho 1 nd ever success-
fully galvanized nft. r weaving.—N.
