(,'E T OCT OF THE ATA.
As some of our merchants are
iMffianing' to get interested in
(he question of shipping produce
and poultry, and something else
besides cotton, we again urge
our farmers to diversify their
crops. Don't let the late rise
in the price of the staple fool
jrou and cause you to put your
labor and money into another col-
too crop to the exclusion of every-
thing else.
Devote a small part of your
land and a little time to poultry;
it will more than repay you.
Keep a few hives of bees; honey
and beeswax are always salable.
Raise plenty of corn, sweet po-
tatoes, Irish potatoes and tur-
nips. Raise plenty of cane to
aake all the molasses you need
and some to sell. Raise all the
Jbogs you can, both for your own
meat and for sale.
If you have plenty of chickens,
eggs, molasses, corn bread, bacon
aod sweet potatoes, you will have
precious little to buy in the gro-
cery line, and by putting all the
land you can't use otherwise into
cotton, you will soon be prosper-
ous and happy.
Don't plant cotton until you
have first looked out for other
things.
Some of our merchants and
county oflicials are still under
the impression that they must
send away from home for every
extra nice or unusually diflicult
order of job printing, though we
are everlastingly sounding in
their ears the slogan, «We print
everything!* We can easily seel
how they have received this im-
pression in the past, as very few
country offices are ever equipped
to do all kinds of job printing, but
we respectfully insist that we
have worked in the large offices
ourselves and know by experi-
ence just how this work is done,
and have purchased the neces-
sary material to do it right.
It is no more than fair that we
should be given an opportunity
todo the work at home—always
under a cast-iron guarantee that
it shall be equal in every respect
to the very beat.
Every dollar spent with your
home printers remains at home,
is spent at home, and circulates
through the channels of business
right back again to you. We em-
ploy home men, who spend all
their money here—and we are
always increasing our force and
our business.
We are ambitious to build up
a large printing establishment
here, and we must first get all
the home printing before reach-
ing out after outside work.
Don't be a clam, but at least
give us a chance to figure on your
work.

20 years for the use ol a Pacific
cable was thought to have been
knocked out some time ago, but
it is on deck again as an amend-
ment to the sundry civil bill pro-
posed by Senator Frye. It can-
not be knocked out in the senate
on a point of order as the Nicara-
gua canal bill was in the house,
nor can the same tactics be fol-
lowed in the house when the bill
goes back with senate amend-
ments. That is why the sena-
tors who are trying to get the
Nicaragua canal bill through have
had what is practically the Hep-
burn bill added to the river and
harbor bill as an amendment.
They haven't undertaken an easy
job, as it is understood L/.ar Reed
has declared his intention to pre-
vent canal legislation, no matter
what has to be held up *o do so,
and the senators are confident of
getting the best of the Czar, who
is said to oppose the canal onl>
because he is unwilling that work
should be begun upon it under
the McKinley administration.
There are few democrats in
congress who are opposed to our
paying the $20,000,<*K) to Spain
which the treaty of peace calls

the queen of Greece.

There is some talk of a com-
promise on the army bill, which
! is now before the senate, but it
is not coming from the demo
crats. Senator Cockrell, who re-
ported the democratic bill to the
senate, says that measure will
give the administration, tcmj o-
rarily. all the tniops it can possi-
bly have any need for, and that
further than that he and his
democratic colleagues arc not in-
clined to go. It is believed by
many that the semi-repudiation

having the distinction of being
of the youngest in the South.

this appropriation, for it to re-
ceive the same treatment. Two!
separate bills ha\e airead) been
introduced making this appro-'
priation, one by Mr. Cannon and
one by Mr. Gillett. The latter's
bill also contains the Mchncry!
resolution, which the senate
adopted last week. When a vote
is taken on this appropriation,
there will not tie half a dozen
democrats recorded against it,
although the democrats are all
practically opposed to the per-
manent retentinn of the Philip-
pines. The prompt payment of|
this money is a question of na ,
tional honor, not of policy.
Senator Tillman got in a good
joke on Senator Lindsay when he
interrupted the latter's argu-
ment in favor of abolishing the
two years' cruise that is now a
portion of the regular course of
naval cadets, by repeating the
old-time verse beginning,
«Mother, may I %<> .ut to swim.
Amidst the laughter of the sena-
tors and the occupants of the gal-
leries, Mr. Lindsay de-lared it
was the best speech he had ever
heard Mr. Tillman make, and
then proceeded with his own
speech.
