We condense the following letter from
D. T. Hunter, Esq. í "
"Four Indians -were seen about ten miles
West of us by a couple of stock hanter3, about
11 o'clock, t\ro dars ago. The Indians were
mounted on two horses, making their way up
the Colorado. A party immediately started in
pursuit, an<i being joined by citizens in the
neighborhood, encamced on ihe trail the same
night. Owing to the roughness of the country
it was impossible to trail them. The party, in
squads of four, followed the course the Indian?
were pursuing. By three o'clock the Indians
had crossed over the river into Llano county,
hfteen miles from here, and kilted tliree horses
in .the Divis settlement. They then re-c-ossed
the Colorado into our county, and went into
Colonel Coffer's stock r'r.pge, where they mtirV
dered one of our mo3t higitlj-esteemed citizens
—a Mr. Rob't. Adams. Mr. A. was an old sol-
dier, having served twenty years in the regular
armyuand was the man who carried the des
patch from Gen. Scott to Gen. Worth, before
the. city of Mexico. He had been a long time
proteeiing the country in wtech be tras mur-
dered—for he received his discharge here. He
leaves a widow aBtl one child to mourn his un-
t roely end. He was unarmed *vh<;n artarked
After m trderinirhtm he was scaioe l and strip-
ped of part of bis clothing, his h >r$e, saddle,
pocket-knife, &c., taken. Af er this act the
Indians hilled and barbecued a beef. Early
next morning (having each secured a horse)
they Warted down Beaver creek, crossed the
Colorado af/the Salt Works, and between day-
break and snu up they were seen by Luther
Cowan ne.ir the Salt Works A party from
the Salt Works started in pursuit. It consist
ed of D. C. CowaB, Gid CowHn. Luther Cowan
and Jchn Barhns. Af tr following ihe trail
about four miles they came upon the Indians,
who were making for a cedar-brake oa the
right. They kept up ti running fight for a
mile, the.Ifidiims attempti-.tr to get to th<* ce-
dar, but were flanked by Gid and D. C. Cow-
an. At lagt Q'd Cownn crowded one sácloíe-
ly that it became ahnni-to-hand iightbetween
the two. For some time they fought, the In-
dian attempting to shoot him "with a, bów and
arrows, and Gid fighting with his bowie-knife.
At length he pare him ¡1 stab with the knife
which made him stazger oft", ond then Luther
Corvan came tip, and as the Indian was getting
off, he gave him the contents of his rifle. This
fini.-he(i him. The atheis then escaped with
one of their number wounded, as was seen
from the blood on their trail. Gid Cowan was
badly wounded with an arrow, though not
mortally It is a wonder that ho escaped.—
Mr. D. f}. Cowan was thrown from his horse,
and at the most critical niotrent could lend,
him no aid. The oiher two gentlemec; wéré
ridincr indifferent horses, and eould not keep
up with the chase. It is si.pposed by scouting
parties that Indians are still in the Morgan
creek cedar-brake, about ten miles N..W. of
here, ihough they afford ju?t such hiding plac-
es as would serve them for months, and-it is
almost impossible to dislodge them. This
murder was committed in about fifteen miles
of the Sulphur ^'pringd.
"These facts n?ed no comment When the
depredations will eud no one knows. The
bolrtnés? of this act indicates that the worst
passions of the Indians are aroused, and that
Mood as welt as booty is their desire here-
after."

SAM HOUSTON,
Said, In his retiring speech in the U. S. Senate.
" This is one of the most authentic and valuable
books iu conncetlon with the general affairs of
Texas that can be found ; in which nothing is
staled upon individual responsibility—every
thing in it is sustained by the official docu-
ments." K3F

I beg leave to call public attention to this
plensaut tummer retreat, now open for the re-
ception of company generally, and at all times
to tho invalid who may resort to it for its medi-
cal virtues as a curative.
The beneficial—I may say magical effects of
these waters upon the diseased human system,
have long sinew become a fixed fact, established
by tbe experience and unanimous testimony of
a*host ot witnesses, who have practically real-
ized the great truth that they are a panacea in
the almost endless catfllo^ne of human ills. For
1 en years it has been ihe unceasing desire of
the proprietor, accompanied by tbe most un-
tiring effort to get up at this point, for which
nature has done so much, a great Southern
central watering-place. And having already
invested over thirty thousand dollars iu build-
ings and other substantial improvements, ho
hazards nothing 111 saying to those seeking either
health or pleasure, that this est iblishment offers
inducements second to none in the South.
There has recently been added to the estab-
lishment a greet many single rooms, a large
am tun t of new furniture, and also a very fino
new Piauo. and other instrum"nts of music.
There will be a good Band of Music in at-
tendance, and* v¡siij¿nt3 can amuse themselves
as I hey s e prop r.
