ing, though I think, with dué > -
candid appeal to the people of the nón-slavéholdingí
•States, not so much against the annexation > of Texas
as against the harmony of the Union under the pre
sent Constitution.
It will have, Ido not doubt, mote effect abroad thaj
at home, in pointing out to the astute diplomacy ai
active intrigue of Europe the ouly weak points in otir
national position—^points which, it seems t o me, none
but enemies can contemplate with satisfaction. The
«ame number of your paper which contained the ad-
dress of Messrs. Adams, &c. furnished evidence of a
design on the part of.Great Britain to interfere direct'
ly .in the relations of Texas to that country and of tbiá,
and to disturb the question of domestic slavery on
our frontier, aud in a-fcountry already acknowledged
liy England as independent, and therefore not yet
aubject to British control. . Is not Mr. Adams the last
- man who ought to desire tho establishment of British
Íower over the country between the Sabine ánd .the
Lio Grande? Does any man know better than
that this territory ought now of light to be part'ái
parcel of the United States? Does any man know
terity may bastan 1° atenba^tu hn n ^
ric rtotiws in now attempting to invoke the prejudi-
ces ota particular section of the *uion against slave-
ry, in order to prevent the acquisimm of a territory
jiiow peopled by pur countrymen, and which has \>een
improperly lost to Us.
What has slavery to do with this question? Will
the number of slaves in the United Stated be increased
by the annexation/of Tpxas? Wil.1 the number of
alaVeholdiugState^be increased? It is true that the
climate and soil oí Texas ate peculiarly adapted to
tho Culturo of cottonysngar, &c.—crops which render
slave labor more profitable than it can be in grain-
growing regions, and wis may induce the slave pop-
ulation now in. the Uniteii Slates to advance southward
in the.eveut of annexation. But as this populating
advances to tbe South, will it not recede from the
North? Is.it the object V your correspondents to
confine the slave popálaiionof the United Stales with-
in a compass so narrow as ley multiply the hardships
if the slave* and to compel\be master to turn him
bose upon the North Wd tháWest, nominally free,
