Lrvx Withih tovb MxJlBb.—Next to the slavery
of. intemperance, what slavery on earth is more
galling than that of poverty and indebtedness? The
man who is everybody's debtor is everybody's
slave, and ina much worse condition than he who
serves a ringle master.
For the sake ot the present, then, as well as for
the sake of the future, we would most earnestly
urge upon every working man and boy, to live
within his means. Let him lay by some thing every
dtay; if but a penny, be it apenny, it is better than
nothing; infinitely better tfian running in debt a
penny a day, or a penny a week. If he can earn
a dollar, let him try fairly and faithfully the expe-
riment of living on ninety cents. He will like it. ^
"Beople will laugh." Let them laugh. ^They
will call me stingy." Better call you stingy than
say you do not pay your debts, "they will won-
der why I do not have better furniture, live in a
finer house, and attend concerts, and the play-
house.'1 Let them wonder for a while ; it won't
hurt them, and it certainly won't you. By-and-by
you can have.a fine house and fine furniture of
'our own,: and they will wonder again, and come
tilliag and cooing around you like so many pleased
fools. Try the experiment. Live within your

Thb Old Wowah and bkb Dogs.—In Brooklyn,
recently, several bold* policeman essayed unsuc-
cessfully to effect the arrest of ah old German wo-,
man, a rag-picker, she keeping them at<bay with
the assistance of five large dogs and a very dan-
gerous looking pitchfork. A strong reinforcement
was at length procurad, and they succeeded in
capturing her, after shooting three of 1 her dogs. ''

and pulled trigger, bu t tbe cap Tailed; to do work .
At this moment the grizzly discovcírád'htií peisicu-
tor and started for him with terrible growls and
murderous intent; Quick as lightning Jfíñi brought
a revolver to bear upon him, and put five biüls in
carcass, and was. in the' act of administering the
sixth, when the bear with his paw knocked the
pistol out of his bands. However, the desperate
hunter was not yet disarmed. He still had a large
knife, which be drew, and then came the tug of
war. They went at it knife and paw—struck over
and under, and occasionally indulged in a'Hside-
winder," that favorite stroke of bruin. At last the
knife, which had been playing all about tbe vitals,
proved the victor, and with a savage growl, this
monarch of the woods yielded up his life to the
Maker of bears, and his caroass, which weighed
about a thousand pounds, to the victorious hunter.
He did not die, however, without taking a hor-
rible revenge, and Jim Wilburn's trigger-fihger
will never endanger the life of another bear. He
won tbe fight at a terrible cost. The beast bit off
bis arm above the elbow, and injured him severely
otherwise. We are informed that he is lying in a
very dangerous condition.—San Francisco Herald.
John Pacenix's Fiuni Attachment Machiní.—
Like most great inventions, the attachment is of
great simplicity. An upright shaft is connected
with the machine by a cogwheel and pinion, and
supported below by a suitable frame-work. Two
projecting arms are attached to the shaft, to one of
which a large cat is connected by a harness, and
to ' the' other a living mouse is suspended, by
the tail, within a few inches of the nose of the
motor. 4-8 the cat springs towards the mouse the
latter is removed, and keeping constantly at thé
original distance, tbe machine revolves .with great
rapidity. The prodigious velocity produced by the
rapacity of the cat in its futile endeavors to over-
take the mouse, can only be imagined by one what
has seen the attahment in fall operation.
It is thus that man shows his supremacy over
the brute creation by making even their rapacious
instincts subservient to his use.
Should it be required to arrest ihe motion of the
maohine, a handkerchief is thrown Over the mouse,
and tbe car.atonce pauses, disgusted.
Remove'the handkerchief, and again she springs
forward with renewed ardor.- Tbe writer has seen
one cat (a tortois shell) of so ardent and unwearing
disposition that she made eighteen pairs of men's
pantaloons, two dozen shirts, and seven stitched
sk'irts before she lay down exhausted. It is to be
hoped the ladies throughout the land avail them-
selves of this beautiful discovery, which will en-
tirely súpérsede-thé Use of the needle, and make
the manufacturer of clothing atol houaeheld mate-
rials a matter of pleasure' to themselves,' and ex-
citing and healthy exercise to their domestic ani-
mals.

A Talkativx Bird.—In the mews where the
horses were kept was a tame raven, which would
walk in and out, sometimes in a stately manner,
and sometimes-in a more knowing fashion, with a:
short straw in his bill, scanning what was going on,
with his head turned: up on one side and a
wide awake eye. He was a general favorite, and
rather encouraged by Pbilip, who would sometimes
give Mm a bit of meat; and as he saw that Philip
and Jick were immense friends, he soon began to
hop with biB bit of meat up Jaok's stall, flutter
into Jack's manger, and, in ,a corner ot it, eat his
morsel in peaceiand privacy, Jack looking down
on him tbe while with41 patronizing air. -Ashe
was thus employed, the gambols between Bhilip
and Jack would often be going on—gambols always
accompanied, on Philip's part, fey favorite words.
On^fin'c morning, Philip was starred by the sound
of capers and kicks as be approached the stable,
and at hearing the double of 101 own voice crvine.

of Jack's tail as he capered and kicked, the par-
