Doc. 30, 1884. ]
Last ni^lit will lona; bo re-
membered by the good people
of this city, as an epoch in the
social-history of Starr county;
the occasion being the joint
celebration of the sixty-sixth
ibir.thday of our worthy towns-
man, Samuel J. Stewart, and
the christening of his first
grand-child, Lucy Lopez, At
,a« early hour the invited
guests assembled at Mr. Stew-
Hrt'tí house and from thence
wen&ed their way to the
cliurcV where the child, un-
der the fostering care of her
padrinos* Mr. and Mrs. Emil
Vizcaya, was christened, with
all the solemnity attending the
Catholic celebration of this
r'te. From the church the
entire party, consisting of over
th ree hundred persons, re-
turned co Mr. Stewart's and
partook ot cake, chocolate
and other like luxuries. At
.9 o'' lo.oJ> the doors of the
court house were thrown open
the floor was soon crowded
with 4he youth, beauty and
fair of the .surrounding coun-
try, and three hours were
quickly passed in the mazy
dance. The court room was
verv neatly decorated with
*
mirrors, pictures, lace cur-
tains and evergreen. At mid-
night. the summons came to
popper, and upon reaching
it he hou*e we found tables oc-
.cupyi.ng every room on the
gnmyd-fluor and literally
groaning under th^ir weight
o,f provision®, for our worthy
host, aided by his daughters,
Mrs. Lope/, Mrs. Garcia and
Miss Antoinette, had provi
ded what was really a feast,
cooked ¡to perflation, enough
for all present and for twice
as many more. The one hun-
dred and forty-two ladies,
who first surrounded the ta-
bles, did not make any per
ceptible diminution in the
quantity. The male po tion
ot the guests, headed by Mr.
J. K. Monroe and H. L. King,
who were somewhat kepr in
check by our worthy sheriff,
W. W. Shely (better .known
among the "boys" as Wash),
after almost exhausting their
patience, were finally seated
at the festive board, and then
oh! what an onslaught was
there, my countrymen—words
cannot describe it, so I will
leave it to your imagination.
After supper dancing was re-
sumed and continued until 3
o'clock this morning. Judg-
ing hv indications, a number
of the young people present
last night seem to be entan-
gled in the "mystic bonds
which love alone can make'"
to All such applying to Mr.
Ernest Marks, county clerk,
within 30 days, a marriage
license will be issued for half
price (Mexican money), and
Justice Stewart si ys lie will
perform the marriago cere-
mony for nothing. Among
the ladies present were Mrs.
Emil Yizeaya, Mrs. Thoodore
Davis, Mrs. Felipe Garcia,
ivirá. J, Lope*, Mr?, J3, L,
King, Mrs. T. \Y Kennedy,
Mrs. Kivet, Mrs. A. Farias
and Mrs. M. O'Brien; Mips
Bauciui Garcia of Oamargo,
and Misses Antoinette Stew-
art, Mary Howard, Eliza
Howard, Octavia Lund, Man-
uela'Peña, Lucinda Nix, Hen-
rietta Labarty, Elodia Recio
and Genara Oontreras. Fort
Ringgold was well represent-
ed by Maj. Kellogg and wife.
Capt. Liscum and wife, Lieut.
Leefe and wife, Lt. Taylor and
wife, Capt Ropes and wife,
Lt*. Thurston and Slocum
without wives Uncle kam,
as Mr. Stewart is familiarly
called by nearly every one
Iutc, came to ibis county 3S
years ago, and of 72 persons
then living here he is the on-
ly one left. He has for years
past kept the s -al s of justi 'c
evenly balanced as justice of
the peace, and h' s likewise
worthily filled the office of
deputy United Stutos collector
at this port. Now, at the age
of G6 years, with a Jong esta-
blished reputation for honor
and .strict inlegity, he stands
like the sturdy oak, unmoved
by the storms and perplexi-
ties of life, shedding around
him sunshine arid joy. Long
m i y he live to enjoy the fruits
of a well spent life, is t:ie
earnest wish of all that know
him. R.
