ill well endure the effects of tho
Friends, hot sun. Referring to the distribu-
tion of seeds the Commissioner ays:
I am satisfied that the mode hereto-
fore pursued is erroneous, tho quanti-
ty sent entirely too small for even an
experiment. A pint or quart of
wheat, oats, or other coreáis, cannot
tie successfully grown, and such ex-
periments almost uniformly fail be-
cause the quantity is too small. 1
need not hero discuss tho reasons for
this, but the result is manifest to
tlioeo who have tried the experiment.
It would bo fur better to put a half
or whole bushel of seed into the
hands of one oouseiont ious and tiiii l-
ful person than to divido tho tjai'ie
quantity among ten or twenty.

^ The labors of tho past week have
been confined to the Criminal Dock-
et. The ease of tho Stato of Texas
vrA. J- White, charged with the
r.itirdcr of one Joel Miller, to which
we have heretofore alluded, was ta-
'^r-n upon last Thursday morning, and
jxiiiaiimtion of witnesses closed on
Friday evening. The argument of
Council continued until Saturday
evening, when the case was submitted
to the Jury and about 9 o'clock Sat-
urday night a verdict of guilty of
murder in the first degree was re-
turned and death fixed as tho penalty.
On Monday a motion was tiled for a
new trial, which motion, 011 Tuesday
evening last, was ably argued by
defendant's Counsel, but overruled
by the Court. Whereupon defend-
tíiii'h Counsel gave notico of appeal
to Supreme Court.
Heath op Jome John T. Mills.—
Wo learn from the Marshall papers,
that Judge John T. Mills, died at his
residence in that place, at 3 o'clock
011 tho morning of the 2'Jth, nnd was
buried at 10 A. M. the next day.
For many months the deceased had
been in bad health, for weeks
Ills deulh was anticipated; but still,
iíUc!j an event is over nnwelcome.
Judge Mills belongs to the past.
Ills history runs hack to tho organi-
sation of civil government in Texas,

Tho Houston Union gives circula
t'oa to the absurd story, that Lieut.
'Gov. Duiiii met with hisd'eaili through
poison administered by some one,
(we suppose a liu Klux, of course )
It also says that Col. (i. W. Carter
has been dangerously ill, it is sup-
posed from tho effects of poison. Such
charges me being constantly brought
uy the Radical press, and the Union
is' one of the most apt scholars in cir-
culating these falsehoods. That cap-
ital can be made through the circula-
tion of these reports is understood,
and they deserve the contempt of
every law-abiding citizen, and un-
doubtedly do meet with it. And yet
litis serpent-like periodical, in the
identical issue in which it extends
this falsehood, has the assurance to
Fay that it is doing all it can to allay
bitter sectionalism, and to cultivate
good feelings between all iiich. We
presume such willful lies astheabove
uro calculated to bring about a de-
sired cud, such a one as the Union in
reality works for.—Austin Statesman.
The public will be greatly edified
by learning that tho first knowledge
tho Union and the people of Texas
liad Óf the rumors of poison in the
above eases was from the special
telegrams to our Democratic neigh-
bor, tito Houston Times, sent by its
eenior editor, Cupt. J. W. Colvin,
who was in attendance at tho State
Fair. And tho Union, in mentioning
these rumors, expressed the hope that
Micro was no foundation for them.
We merely mention the facts, in the
hopo that tho Statesmau will make
the proper amend, having unjustly
accused Us from want of knowledge
of tliom. TI10 Union lias never
knowingly mis-stated any matter, of
fact, ol* tried thus to make political
'capital.—Houston Union.

all the articles used in its composition are
tho best of tho class to which they belong,
being highly Tonic, Stimulant, Stomachic,
