Ju
Hospital Here Saturday
Last Rites lor Former County Judge Are
Held Monday at First Baptist Church
Judge W. L. Helton. 83, former Hemphill County Judge and one
of the few surviving members of the constitutional convention
which organised the present state of Oklahoma, died Saturday
night at Hemphill County Memorial Hospital here after a long
illness.
Funeral services were conduct-
ed Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock
from the First Baptist Churcn,
with Rev. Hardy Childress, pas-
tor, in charge. Interment was in
the Canadian cemetery.
A native of Missouri, Welford
Lane Helton was born in Maries
county on August 13, 1872, the

Traditional Memorial Day
services at the Canadian ceme-
tery will be conducted again
this year on May 30 ... at 11
o'clock ... by Canadian ex-
servicemen who are members
of the local American Legion
and VFW posts.
VFW Commander R .T. Smith
and American Legion Com-
mander Bill' Hodges this week
announced plans for the an-
nual Memorial Day service,
and issued a call to all local
veterans to report next Thurs-
day night, May 24, at the City
Auditorium at 7:30 o'clock for
the first drill session for the
color guard and firing party.
George Earl Tubb will com-
mand the squad for the Mem-
orial service.
E. J. Cussen will deliver the
Memorial Day address at the
cemetery this year, and Rev.
Burr Morris, pastor of the First
Presbyterian Church, will give
the invocation.

Junior High to
Have Promotion
Program May 23
Junior High School promotion
exercises have been scheduled
for next Wednesday night May
23. at the high school auditor-
ium, when forty members of
the eighth grade class will re-
ceive promotion certificates at
an all-student program.
Theme of the exercises will be
"Today Ends: Tomorrow Be- ■
gins." .
Jimmy Cline will be at the pi-
ano for the processional march,1
and the invocation will be given
by Jack Porter, followed by a
group song, "God Bless Amer-
ica."
Carolyn Sutton, the claas vale-
dictorian, will give the prologue,
to be followed by talks by Betty
Lee Abraham, "A Symbol of Our
Heritage"; John D. Glenn, "On-
ward to Greater Achievements";
and Thomas Waters, "I Am An
American."
Carolyn Sutton and Judy Jack-
son will play a cornet duet,
"Stardust," with Mrs. Hardy Chil-
dress playing the piano accom-
paniment.
Principal John Rowntree will
present the class, and Arthur
Webb, member of the board of
trustees, will award diplomas. |

Commencement exercises for thirty-nine Canadian High School
seniors will be held next Thursday night. May 24, at eight o'clock
at the high school auditorium.
Following tradition, an ail-student program will be presented.
Theme will be "We Choose the Future."

Baccalaureate Services for '56
Seniors Will Be Held on Sunday
Baccalaureate services for the
Canadian High School gradu-
ating doss of 1956 will be held
Sunday night May 20, at eight
o'clock at the high school aud-
itorium.
Jimmy Mitchell, minister of the
First Christian Church of Cana-
dian, will deliver the baccalaur-
eate sermon.
The processional march will be
played by Ann Bennett, and the
opening hymn, "Holy, Holy,
Holy," will be sung by the audi-
ence and choir. Rev. Burr Mor-
ris, pastor of the First Presbyter-
ian Church, will give the invo-
cation, with a choral response by
the high school choir.
The choir will sing a negro
spiritual, "Great Day."

Dale Cain, class president, will
give the invocation; and Tommy
Hobdy and Erbin Crowell jr. will
sing a duet.
The salutatory address, "A For-
tunate Generation," will b e
made by Mildred Sparks; follow-
ed by a piano solo, "Claire de
Lune" by Pat Wyatt.
The valedictory, "With Faith
in the Future," will be given by
Nona Dale Snyder.
High School Principal John
Rowntree will present the class,
and Board Secretary Virgil Brock
will present diplomas to mem-
bers of the graduating class.
Featuring the annual com-
mencement exercises as the cli-
maxing part of the program will
be presentation of the Liske Cup
to the student chosen as this
year's outstanding all - around
high schooler.
The program will be concluded
with the senior class song, "Once
to Every Man and Nation," with
the benediction by Sammy Wil-
bur and the recessional march
played by Ann Bennett.
Air Force Band
Will Play Here
Formal opening of Canadian's new S45.000 municipal swimming
pool has been set for the afternoon of. Memorial Day . . . Wednes-
day, May 30 ... at three o'clock.
On hand to play for the occasion will be the Amarillo Air Force
Band. Exhibition diving by both men and women will be featured
on the program.
HONOR BOY of the 19S6 Grad-
uating class is Erbin (Bunny)
Crowell Jr., who is also presi-
dent of the Student Council
this year.
Highlight of the dedication
program, however, will be the
selection of "Miss Splash" and
"Miss Little Splash." Invitations
have been sent to nine neighbor-
ing towns to send entries for the
"Miss Splash" contest and twelve
local civic organizations will be
invited to sponsor entries.
Girls must be of high school
age. The winner will receive a
large boquet of roses . . . and
the three top-ranking girls will
get free complimentary season
tickets for the pool.
Invitations to sponsor entries
in the Miss Splash contest are
being mailed to Wheeler. Mobee-
tie, Miami, Briscoe, Allison. Hig-
gins, Darrouzett, Booker and Fol-
lett . . . and to twelve local civic
organizations (Shrine Club. Lions
and Rotary Clubs, Parent-Teach
ers Association, etc.).
The "Little Splash" contest will
be open to local pre-school girls
and no sponsors are required.
Parents or the individuals them
selves may enter. Applications
should be made to Mrs. Jgnnie
Deaton . . . and an entry blank
will be found on Page 6 of this
issue of The Record.
The dedication program will
begin with a concert by the Am-
arillo Air Force Band at three
o'clock in the afternoon, and the
pool will be officially opened to
the public after the ceremonies
are completed.
Work on the pool is being
rushed to completion by Con-
tractor Bert Babitzke, who has
promised to have the new pool
ready to go by the afternoon of
the 30th.
Further details of the opening
will be announced next week.
On the committee planning the
pool opening ceremonies are Tom
Abraham, chairman; Harry Wil-
bur jr., Gilbert Dickens. Mrs. Jen-
nie Deaton and Miss Vera Tepe.
New Deep Test
By Magnolia Is
Slated in County '
A new deep oil test for Hemp-
hill County will begin drilling
soon on a location in the north-
east part of the county, ten
miles east of Glazier and about
5 miles northwest of the Boost-
er Station.
Magnolia Oil Company will
drill the wildcat, with Sun Oil
participating, according to re-
ports here this week.
Advance members of the drill-
ing crew were in Canadian Wed-
nesday checking on housing for
the drilling crews.
The wildcat will test the Mis-
sissippi, and is slated to go to
12,500 feet or deeper. Location is
in Section 43, Block 42, H&TC
survey, on land owned by Mar-
garet Hodgson.

Reed Errington of Canadian (
was elected Monday night as
new 5th Zone Commander for the
American Legion, and Roy Dick-
inson of Canadian was named
Zone Adjutant.
The new officers were elected
at a zone meeting Monday night
at the American Legion Hall in
Canadian.
Fifty - four American Legion
and Auxiliary members attended
the zone meeting here, according
to Post Commander Bill Hodges.

Graveside rites for Richard
Brice Elkins, infant son of Mr.
and Mrs. Richard Elkins of Am-
arillo, were held this afternoon
(Thursday) at 2 o'clock in Llano
Cemetery in Amarillo, with the
Rev. Raymond Bowlin, Avondale
Baptist church, officiating.
Richard Brice Elkins was born
November 23, 1955 in Amarillo,
and died Wednesday morning,
May 16, in Northwest Texas Hos-
pital. Burial was under direction
of Blackburn - Shaw Funeral
Home.
Survivors are the parents; a
sister, Laurell Jean; and grand-
parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Elk-
ins of Pampa.

Mcdsens to Leave
On Vacation Trip
Dr. and Mrs. Dick Madsen and
children will leave next Thurs-
day on a vacation trip to Seat-
tle, Washington, where they will
visit in the home of Dr. Mad-
sen's relatives.
The Madsens plan to be back
in Canadian about June 24. Dr.
Madsen's office will be closed
until that time.
