Commerce office now if you want some of these

Replacement of the damaged and missing street
signs all over town is another major project of the
drive. The Canadian Rotary Club has led off with a
substantial donation toward the S5.000-plus need-
ed to do the job. and your cash contributions in any
amount will be welcomed. The Chamber of
Commerce office is handling the fund.
Numbering of houses, and especially of mobile
homes and identification of mobile home parks all
over town, is a project in which everyone can
participate. House numbers will be available at
local businesses handling that sort of merchandise,
and individual home-owners should see to it that
their own homes are identified by proper street
numbers. If you are in doubt as to what the number
of your home or business should be. contact City
Hall. And if you are living in a mobile home park,
urge your landlord to help work out an orderly
numbering system for your neighborhood.
Help will be available from Chamber of
Commerce committees in these and other areas of
the Clean-up and Beautification campaign. Let's
join in helping to make Canadian the most
beautiful small city in the Panhandle. Some of us
think it is already, but there is always room for
improvement.
Economy begins
From The Perry ton Herald
PRESIDENT CARTER has proposed to put an
end to the federal revenue sharing program as
one way to whack the federal budget and make an
effort toward reducing government spending.
As might be expected, this project is meeting
stiff opposition from states, cities, and counties
which have received revenue sharing funds for the
past several years.
Ochiltree county sent two commissioners. Elrick
Wilson and Donald Sell, to Washington last week
to protest the proposed revenue sharing cut and
ask that it be continued.
Commissioner Wilson came home reporting that
an estimated 80 pcrcent of the members of
Congress are for revenue sharing for cities and
counties and expect it to be continued.
Since most states arc now in position of having a
surplus of funds, it is likely that the federal
revenue sharing program will be cut off there.
It has to be remembered that revenue sharing
dates back to the early days of the Nixon
administration, when the President decided that
federal funds should be sent to states, cities, and
counties as a lump sum and leave it up to these
political subdivisions how to spend it. Nixon took
the position that local entities knew better how to
spend federal funds than the government did. and
that revenue sharing would cut out a lot of red
tape.
And so it has. But like any other federal program
involving the spending of money, the recipients
come to depend upon it. Ochiltree county has come-
to depend on it. Revenue sharing funds went a
long way toward building the courthouse annex
and have been used in other ways.
The city depends on revenue sharing for several
programs.
Cutting off revenue sharing funds will be painful
if it comes to pass.
But can we honesth call for a reduction in
federal spending and then object strenuoush to
such a reduction when it comes close to home'

help, but we haven't much confidence in it. Cutting the federal
budget to produce a surplus instead of a deficit could be effective, if it
works, and we hope it docs.. .but again without much confidence.

borrowed capital, only add op to increasing the cost of doing busines
