A Cattle Drive Diary

Saturday June 19
Started about sunrise crossed the line from Wise
to Jack Co climbed some very high hills on the
east side the went down grade for a few miles
and climbed more hills passed through the little
town of Vineyard about 11 a.m. a mineral
watering place after a slow and tiresome drive
arrived in 3 miles of Jacksbourgh camped on
some prairie for the night

Sunday June 20
Broke camp very early drove into Jackbourgh
about 7a.. inquired but dident [sic] get any letter
had the post master to forward my letter on
west, left J- in the East past over hills and
valleys rocks and sands. With post oak on both
sides of us. The hottest weather yet. Camped in
a pasture 7 X 15 miles square and had grass and
water in plenty

Mon June 21
Slept late, got a good breakfast cleaned up and
went fishing laid around let the cattle rest had
dinner about 1 p.m. and broke camp about
past 3 drove across the pasture and camped on
the west side. The mountains and timber makes
me think of Tenn. Saw some of pretties fat cattle
with little calves with them in liberty

Tues June 22
Started about 7 a.m. drove along slow passing
good land and poor land on our way. Saw some
Prairie dogs today the first of note. Very hot
weather now all well and lazy as dogs in August
killed some half grown rabbits for dinner then
went fishing again with little success arrived atFramer about middle the evening wrote a letter
to ma, camped lm west of Farmer

Wed June 23
Never moved today till alter noon. Dick and Mr
Whitfield left us about 2 p m in W-s wagon and
went to graham city to look at the country left
the rest of with the stock we started a 3 p.m. and
traveled about 6 m and camped in a lane that
seemed endless with good grass on it, we never
cook supper on acct late dinner, we are getting
plenty of sleep

Thursday June 24
Us boys got up about sunrise I done the most of
the cooking, the first bread I have made on the
trip after breakfast, we traveled due west for
some 6 or 7 miles stopped and cooked out
dinner I had a lot of birds for dinner we fared
well got to Olney about 3 p.m the boys drove
on and I stayed until Dick and W- came back
had a mess of birds for supper camped 4 1.2 m
west Olney

Friday June 25
Started due west on the Spring Creek road
across an emense stretch of out land dove until
about 1 '/2 p.m. stopped for dinner fished some
without success, broke up about 3 soon drove
into the Northeast corner of Throckmortin Co
near the Upper Brazos River near 5 p.m. had a
slight sand storm. Passed through Spring Creek
camped some 3 m west neare [sic] the dident
[sic] get to fish in it

Saturday June 26
Pulled up stakes early drove along the Brazos
for a few miles stopped at Round Timber in
Baylor Co for dinner plenty of good water so far
