PR1GH 5#c. *od %tM,
In last week's issue we pub-
lished the recommendations of
Mayor Doggett tor a more econ-
omically administered city gov-
ernment. These recommenda-
tions were accepted by the Coun-
cil and the Mayor asked to draw
up ordinances to cover the chan-
ges. The Council met Saturday
night to ratify the ordinances,
but it stems that this body had
re-considered its former action
and when the ordinances were
called up they wero ull voted
down except the one to make the
olliee of City Attorney dependent
uponjees rather than a salary.
The recommendations of the
Mayor would have saved the city
about $1300 annually, and so far
as we have been able to learn a
large majority of the voters ap-
prove his course in the matter and
at the same time are out-spoken
in their disapproval of the unnec-
essary expense the Council is al-
lowing in the administration of
city government.—The Exam-
iner.

Despite the heavy rain that fell
last night, Old S nta Claus, the
Patron Saint of chi dhood, made
his annual visit to McKinne}
and left pres?nts galore.
All day yesterday, despite in-
clemency of the weather, Ins rep-
resentatives were out in full
force, filling almost every avi i -
able place on the walks about the
square and thronging the stores.
It was a case of many souls
"with but a single thought"—that
of buying presents—and the
thought was put into execution
during the entire day and until
late last ni<4111.
The various stores had extra
clorks on duty but all were taxed
to their utmost to wait upon the
groat array of customers, all ea-
ger to make obeisance to the
glorious Christnas season, und
pay loving tribute to its undispu-
ted monarch, Sunta Claus.
There were elegant Christmas
trees at the Christian, Baptist,
Methodist, Episcopal, First Pres-
byterian and Cumberland Presby-
terian churches hist night anil ap-
propriate exercises wero held.
The different trees had been
beautifully decorated and were
laden with presents, all of the
children of the various Sunday
schools being remembered.
