The American railroad problem will never be finally solved unle.\s all
the railroads are consolidated into comparatively few. systems, sayj, fifteen
or twenty, and competitive-in their character. I might add .that there is
no competition in the railroad world, and ought to be none, except tlie
competition of good service.
When that is. done we. can fix rates so that the lowest schedules that

Much to Snockum's disappointment It turned out that there waa no
fun. as the Cockatoo had shrunijta to such a tiny aiae that it waa la a
perfect panic.
"Oh!" It cried, on seeing t*e Fairy, "I came here to the End-of-tba-
Earth with a perfectly good wish, but now such a terrible thing haa hap-
pened to me and I've become so smalt that I am frightened to death I i
don't care if my other wish . , my FIRST wish, NSVER comes
true . . . all I now want )t to on re again be my own aise."
• You can-imagine how happy it felt when Stella explained that before
It ahould leave for home It could drink from the Qet-Blg-Pool and that it
would then be big once more. "But." ahe added, with a smile, "what was
the wish* you brought with you? Tell me."
e "Well." the Cockatoo answered, "I have '.lown all the way from Aus-
trufia, where I live, and there Is, in my country, a certain nut called the
kanary nut that ia so hard Jfrelled that no bird has ever been able to
crack it open. My wish is that you should put such strength In my curved
bill that I'll be able to open the kanary and eat it."
"But why," Stella asked curiously, •'do you want to eat It. when you
don't even know whelllKryou would like It? You have no Idea what the
kanary tastes like becauae, as you aay, you have never been able to
crack one;"
"That's Just it V snickered the bird, Tm curious . , « ever ao cuir
rlous; and b«KUk>% 1 want to be able to do something to get ahead of
other BtiFafi." •
J Stella waved her wand above the funny little crested head before her.
Ever aln9e this once-upon-a-time day the Black Australian Cockatoo
has had such sn enormously strong bill that it haa been able to eat the
seeds of the kanary nut. This is how It does It: First, holding a nut
lengthwise in its bill. It aaws a ridge in the shell; then, holding the nut by
its foot, it bites off a leaf from some
tree, which It sticks in the lower
notch of Its bill to keep the nut
from slipping; then again taking
the nut in the bill, It nips off a
piece of the shell. Next, again
holding the nut In Its claws, the
sharp pointed bill is used aa a
nut pick. (
" "Tell me, cocky one," laugher

Cockatoo. I am the largest of

When the clergyman heard of the
criticism, ho tenders his resignation,
which was discussed at an open meet-

The debate was very spirited, utid it
left no doubt that there was a strong

The majority voted against accepting
the resignation. >
